Hello! I'm Bunie.net's resident medical student (hell i'm sure there are more but I'm the only one who openly declares it!) I love my emblem, and I am periodically active.
I have a Twitter

Just how much flex is there within the rules, if a thread is well thought out, encourages discussion but goes against the rules, could it be permitted?

For example, it is against the rule to talk political or religous topics, however what if a thread was made that applied political topics to the community, for example naming different forums after political parties.

[edit for example]

And the Shadow fell upon the Land, and the World was riven stone from stone. The oceans fled, and the mountains were swallowed up, and the nations were scattered to the eight corners of the World. The moon was blood, and the sun was as ashes. The seas boiled, and the living envied the dead. All was shattered, and all but memory lost, and one memory above all others, of him who brought the Shadow and the Breaking of the World. And him they named Dragon.

Can't really use this example because that rule went bye-bye when the rules got revised.

For example, it is against the rule to talk about specific users in a post, however if they where used as an example in a thread that explored the area around the circumstances of that user would it still be locked down?

cars, girls & cake all day everyday

Depends on the moderator.

Some of them might let a few rules go if the thread is for a good cause (some of you might remember the Pepsi petition thread I'm referring to) others will let it be, but are more adamant on enforcing rules in that case that won't contribute towards discussion, like bumping.

There is plenty of flex in the rules, it just depends on how much a moderator is willing to give.

But i'm pretty sure a thread would be locked if it was about a specific user?

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

Well, of course the rules have some flex. But one important thing to keep in mind anytime a user decides to violate the rules in the hopes of a good discussion: he is constrained in how far he can go by how the post would be interpreted by the strictest Forum Ninjas. That may be a bit obvious to some of you (including from the replies so far in this thread), but my PM inbox tells me that it's not so obvious to others.

Fortunately, with the way the rules have been changed, a good deal of "flex" is built in. As just one example, your example is no longer valid; the rules no longer contain a blanket prohibition against talking about specific users. Instead, the rules now require users to "respect [their] fellow members" and prohibit "harassment." As long as these two guidelines are followed, there is plenty of flex to talk about other specific users.

Not necessarily. See the revised forum rules. For example, numerous threads exist in the Halo: Reach Forum about specific Halo: Reach players -- especially those who are well-known to the community, but even some threads along the lines of "Please take a look at my stats and tell me how I can get better at Halo: Reach." As long as the threads remain generally cordial and on-topic, they're perfectly fine.

I'll make a different example, but if the strictest moderator wanted it locked, and another didn't, is there somekind of system to solve that conundrum?

Also, it seems I'll be making my "Foman is totally a pool shark" thread, soon.I saw him dominating fools at the bar.

Apparently Johnnie Walker Black Label is some kind of miracle drink that turns horrible pool players into good ones.

Thanks Anelf!

But at the same time, how is one to know what is considered respecting a fellow member? I know it's obviously all up to the discretion of whatever Ninja or Employee is present in the situation at the time, but still. A simple joke to some may be disrespect to others.

What seems to be a perfectly fine comment about a user from some forumgoers point of view, could be, decidedly, harassment from another users point of view. And if that "other user" is a Ninja, that person faces a thread lock, a warning, or a ban.

I, personally, think there shouldn't be as much flex in the rules for the simple fact that, though it may be to the average forumgoers advantage to have a bit more freedom in the words they put into text on the forums, it can also be a detriment as we now have freedom, but don't know how much.

It's like our options are to either stay in one room forever. Or be able to stay in the room and also have the option to walk down a hallway to another room. But, at anytime whilst walking along that hallway, if you step in the wrong spot, no matter how far down it you are, you die. (for 3-7 days and then you respawn)

Only regret is I didn't play more of it.

If you haven't noticed by now, I'm sort of a jerk.

For example, Qbix is very ban happy. Probably the only thing that can get him his kicks is banning people, sometimes it's just for the rage messages after.
