I'm not gonna add a poll because that's a pretty easy way to kill a thread before you post it, but I want to know your opinion, community. Now that Bungie has moved on, and they aren't managing or producing any more Halo games, do you think that this place will ever be as active as at the height of Halo 3? (I chose H:3 over the height of Reach because 3 was MUCH more popular).

Let me say this, I'm not going to go all halo purist on your asses. I liked Bungie's Halo trilogy and respective spinoff games (ODST and Reach). But I don't think lightning can't strike twice. Whatever "Destiny" is, I'm sure Bungie is working VERY hard on it and that it will no doubt exceed our expectations.

But, from a realist point of view, Halo is still Halo. And not many series (apart from some of nintendos) can say that they've topped halo in both quality and popularity (and by the end of 343's trilogy, quantity).

So, I'm sure you've all noticed the mass exodus from the forums since Bungie stopped managing Halo on the 2nd and since 343's forums started to get more popular. The only forum that I think hasn't suffered much of a blow is OT:TF (but let's be honest, the flood could survive an atomic bomb).

And, not that I don't think that what Bungie is doing with Aerospace, sponsoring and producing mobile and social games for small developers and such, is really cool, but those games really aren't going to bring much more of a user base to the site unless one of them goes Top 25 on the iOS app store or something like that.

So I'll ask again, do you think Bungie.net will ever be as popular as it used to be (or possibly even more so) and why?

This site will always have it's ups and downs depending on when Bungie's games are released. It might never be as active as it was around the times Halo 3/Reach came out, but that might be a good thing.

  • 08.29.2011 1:04 PM PDT

It really depends on how popular Destiny becomes, but because Bungie made themselves really well known with Halo, I feel that the popularity will carry over.

Agreed.

As soon as Bungie releases their next project, the site productivity will explode.

Yes, just as soon as Bungie announces something new and when that new title is released it be alive as it was before, I have to admit though there is definitely a lot less usage within the forums, there are a handful of users that are on here a lot rather than loads of different users

People come and go all the time, creating a different game to Halo isn't going to stop that.
Everyone who was just here for Halo will go to 343, while we, as a community, will see new people springing up around the forums as Bungie's new game gets nearer completion/gets released.

The sites population is always going to fluctuate. It's just one of those things.

It's the nicer quieter time between game releases

It'll be interesting to see the community once Bungie announces their new game - since it could draw in a whole bunch of new people depending on the genre/consoles

And the Shadow fell upon the Land, and the World was riven stone from stone. The oceans fled, and the mountains were swallowed up, and the nations were scattered to the eight corners of the World. The moon was blood, and the sun was as ashes. The seas boiled, and the living envied the dead. All was shattered, and all but memory lost, and one memory above all others, of him who brought the Shadow and the Breaking of the World. And him they named Dragon.

Hopefully not. SO MUCH WORK

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

I dunno, but after talking with a couple of Bungie folks at PAX, they are VERY excited about their new project. I couldn't pry any specifics out of anybody (I knew from experience I wouldn't be able to, so I didn't try very hard), but if the new project goes as well as they're hoping, we may see a greater population on this site than ever before :-D

I think we'll see more activity after we get some more info on Bungie's new game.

I am disappoint in your prying skillz but, honestly, I don't know if I could handle a BNet more active than at Halo 3's height of popularity... Imagine how many floodians there would be... "Billions and billions of stars*!"

*stars = floodians

I never quite new how popular that it was seeing that I used to just B.net as a stat-tracking website and just started using the forums late last year?...

I don't really know why people think that. Reach's highs for both the game and the website were significantly above Halo 3.

As for your primary question - we'll just have to see what the future brings, won't we?

Well I was going off like... sales and online activity but I guess it was equally active on the forums now that I think of it.

I think that Op's question will depend on whether Bungies new universe will be more popular than Halo.

...Which I have no doubt it will

Well the popularity seems low, but is acually surprisingly high seeing that Halo: Reach forums almost have the same amount of pages as the Halo 3 forums?...

Once they announce their next project, I'm sure the site will explode. I kind of like a quieter b.net, though.

^I guess if you say their next "project", then yes, that has not yet been announced. But if you say game, Crimson is right around the corner?...

  • 08.29.2011 1:43 PM PDT

I'm sure they'll get a big boost of people returning once they announce their project.

And here's a Reach population report that's done on HBO every now and then. Reach's population's just fine compared to what most people think.
