I've finally started playing Multiplayer for the first time today, and TWICE I ran into players that appeared to be cheating.

I chose to play CTF exclusively, as having teammates with real brain power verses simple AI was something I was wishing for in the solo campaign, and playing a "free for all" (or whatever it's called) has never appealled to me.

One of my first games had a player that seemed to stand still and do nothing while hanging out near the flag. He/she never attacked the opponents even when they appeared right in front of him/her. It occurred to me that the person could have gotten a call or something, but for some reason, the opposing team never attacked this player. Hmmm....

Realizing what was going on, I just chose to quit that server and try elsewhere. For a while, it was fine. Then I noticed when I re-spawned in my base, that one of my teammates had the opposing team's flag, and was "hiding" in the stairwell, just steps from the place where the flag is placed to score a point. ????? After watching this person simply stand there for a minute, I decided he must be another cheater (after all, we can't score as long as he's holding the flag), and I shot him with my rocket launcher. Unfortunately, the server must have had Friendly Fire disabled, as he took no damage. He didn't even react, so I IMed the group that I suspected this player was cheating, and that he/she was holding the enemy's flag back in our base. I then tossed a few frag grenades at him, hoping that Explosives could still hurt him. As I suspected, he took no damage. I few minutes later, a few of my OTHER teammates respawned in the base, and the cheating player decided to place the flag. ????? I suspect he/she did it as it would be way too obvious that he/she was cheating if we ALL saw it happening. Regardless, at this point, I decided not to waste any more time with this group.

I'm hoping Bungie does SOMETHING about this, because it's hard enough to win the game when everyone plays fair, but it's something else entirely when they're cheating. And if Bungie doesn't care to fix this problem, I can't see myself buying any multiplayer games from them in the future.

What do you think?

You do know that you can't score if the other team also has your flag, right? Most people know this, but I still run into people that don't. Maybe he was waiting for you guys to return the flag first...

Also, if Friendly Fire is turned off it will prevent you from hurting your teammates. No cheating necessary. It's an option for the administrator or whoever set up the gametypes for the server. You can set it to FF off (impossible to damage teammates), Explosives only, shields only, or FF on (just like normal).

As far as I know, there are no cheats that allow a person to be invincible. There are a few other hacks (like invisible walls, and a hack that makes you warp all over the screen more so you're harder to kill). But the way the HaloPC server is designed makes it extremely difficult (nearly impossible) to make a cheat that would give you, say, infinite ammo, infinite health, super overshield, etc. There's cheating galore in games like Counterstrike, but that's because the game's network code keeps track of things in such a way that is very easy to exploit. Halo is different.

Anyway, sounds to me like he was just waiting for a flag return and friendly fire was turned off on that server. I laugh so hard when people try to betray me when FF is turned off, and then once they figure out that it's not working they start screaming "cheater."

talking elmo is right, this just looks like another n00b not understanding the game and shouting "cheater" everytime they see something they dont understand (eg a warper with a 500 ping) and get shot effortless by someone much better then they are

in your poll wheres the option to say there are no cheats?

I just wanted to add that this also is not evidence of "cheating." It's not uncommon to see idle players in games. People who had to go to the bathroom, or the phone rang and they forgot to quit the game, or maybe just jerks who want to reserve their space on the server for when they come back later. In the online gaming world these people are referred to as AFK (away from keyboard). Anyway, it doesn't take long for people to figure out who isn't playing. If the guy isn't moving, has zero kills, zero assists, and a bunch of deaths, then it's probably safe to assume he's an AFKer. Since he's not a threat to the other team a lot of times they won't bother wasting their time or ammo killing him. Nothing unusual.

Hmmm... Sounds like I may have been too quick to judge. I _AM_ new to Halo multiplayer, and unfortunately, the manual is worthless regarding rules for CTF -- I admit, I wasn't aware that a flag couldn't be returned if OUR flag was out. I only found this out after browsing the Multiplayer guide on the Bungie Web site. But the other case, where a player was standing there and not being attacked, was one where the game gave each player a rocket launcher at each respawn, so I can't imagine people risking instant death while taking time to observe their opponent, especially since a single shot from _their_ weapon (or a grenade, which wouldn't waste one of their two rockets) would take them out. Still, it's not beyond the realm of possibility. Point (grudgingly) taken.

OH! And about Bungie needing to do something about it, I'd have to say that it's really beyond their control, even when somebody really IS cheating, as it would be nearly impossible to be sure it's not a AFK player.

I find this kinda anoying when I play halo.
Although I have been playing quite poor since school has started again, I get called a hacker and a cheat alot.
I sniper ghost's or hogs and get called hacker, 3 pistol hs's and get called hacker and even when I hit a hog in midair with a rocket.

BTW Cube, is that [SSO]Cube? If it is you proberbly remember me, I'm [DZ]xpert

You're not a hacker, you just have a better internet connection if you are playing on a university's T-1 line (might even be a T-3 or better). I know when I played on my school's server I could detonate rockets in mid air with the pistol, but on my home internet...I'm lucky to even see the explosion. You might also notice a performance drop as people leave or join the game, also when you join a new game, sometimes it will take a full game for the server to adjust to your connection. During this time, you may notice some really unfair abilities like one-shot pistol kills, insane respawn killing, increased speed/everyone else moves slow or freezes, etc...GOD I MISS THOSE DAYS!!!!

Sorry, I didn't mean I play at school/university on LAN/better connection, I mean although my play has declined since school has started I still get called a hacker, but I'm still on my own home PC.

Why would you assume someone is cheating if they were just standing there, not doing anything and not getting attacked? It's not like that's hurting you or your team.

I've been playing Halo PC online almost since it's come out, and i have never actually seen a hacker. It's either a really skilled person, or he's lagging. So ther can't be that many people actually hacking out there.

people are forgeting that there are cheats to halo (or perhaps u call them hacks). most of the time, people play honestly, but other times, they use software to help them locate enemies, or inprove their aim. without this software, it's impossible to cheat in halo. it would be great if in halo 1.6, they made it so that people with this software can't join games with honest players. but rember, don't be quick to judge someone. there are some really good players out there.

For example, people often use 'small' cheats, such as giving the pistol an 8x zoom, making it so that anyone with an Active Camo can still be seen perfectly, even so far as to adjust the skins so that everyone appears bright pink and can always be seen. Its just the way the game is.

When people are just standing there, it probably means that they're busy for the moment (like going to the bathroom) and don't want to leave the game. cheap players pound these dudes for points.

ever try talking to other players?

sometimes players will wait to score until a team member is at the opponents base to grab the flag when it pops up.

the nearest thing I've seen that comes to cheating is teamkilling, and using modded maps.

If i think someone is not behaving properly(usually teamkilling), I'll give several warnings before I torch them.
If you torch first, you're liable to have a in team feud happen, and those suck.

one time i was playin at good old blood gulch, and i was standin over my enemies base and I saw that 2 red guys were throwing nades. but they were standing inside in the corner that is on your left or right of the entrance. the nades were thrown THROUGH the roof. i saw them popping out of the base and flyin around. and so one of them hit my foot. which was really cheap. so i got pissed.

I don't think there are any cheats on Bungie or EU-Bungie servers, however .......

I was playing last night on a "home based" server (?), with a max. of eight players, who were "inviting" players for play. This was a CTF in Blood Gulch, by the way. Now, the owners of the server, (I guess as they all had the same first three letters in thier names) were able to do two shot kills at *extreme range* with pistols. I know pistols are good, but come on..... Also every time I was respawned on top of the base, I was immediatly sniped!! When I typed the comment "Stop spawn killing", I was immediatly kicked off the server and banned !!
I guess some people don't take kindly to criticism........:-)
Anyway I'll stick to EU-BUNGIE servers in future, maybe see some of you guys around!!
