Good players work together...and no matter how good you are, you're not physic. - blade6321
Welcome to Missing the Point 101! I think you'll do just fine here.
I am rather certian that when an FPS like this has books based on it that sell in numbers almost as massive as the games that some people do care about the story. The comics based after the game are good enough to compete with Spider Man. Halo Legends and Halo Evolutions expand the story even more.
They would not be there if people did not care. They released 1 book prior to CE. Everything else is 10 years worth of Hindsight aimed at an expanded universe. People care about the story because it was told well within the limits of a game.
Since I've already touched upon the whole "No fun, no sales" shpeel, I'll spare you the repetition. Oh, and good enough to compete with Spiderman? I'd seriously like to see your source on that one. P.S. Spider-man sucks.
If this game had no story then Halo 1 would end up somthing like this: soldies wearing modern military costumes colored red and blue shooting eachother for no apparent reason with M16 assault rifles with 60 round magazines. Have you even seen the Alpha stages of Halo?! They might as well have called it Slightly less generic space marine: Mac Edition
I am not saying all FPS games have to be sci-fi to be cool. I am just saying they have to be in a believable world where what you do in the game makes sense. Halo's just as believable as it is unbelievable. The fact that we use bullets is a little fishy for 2552. The fact that the rifles are so low powered is just straight up ridiculous to me. Technology grows in leaps and bounds. If they can run a Warthog on hydrogen, than I'm 100% sure we'd have found a more effective way to kill ourselves by then.
All of the sci-fi aspects of the game can be explained by modern science. Your point? Most modern sci-fi uses actual science to back its' story.
Watch Bungie's video on the front page. They almost cut the multiplayer for Halo 1. That would have left nothing but the story and aliens to kill. The story came first. Halo: The Fall of Reach was released months before Halo 1. Most aspects of the story was created way before the gameplay Again, what's your point? Of course they had a rough idea of the CE story. You generally have one before you start developing a game. But it doesn't matter if you have an award winning story written by Isaac Asimov himself...If it aint worth playing (FUN!) then the game gets axed in the alpha stages. Oh, and since we're on the topic, rewatch the exact same vidoc. Pay close attention to when they talk about the lines forming up to play the game. All of those lines were for multiplayer.
Does Halo have an amazing story? -blam!- YA it does! But it's been built off of the success spawned from that 1 game that made a billion great memories. You remember, that one game that was really really....what's the word? Oh right! Entertaining!
