Subject: Rises and Falls in activity lead to a Stronger Community.

Hello! I'm Bunie.net's resident medical student (hell i'm sure there are more but I'm the only one who openly declares it!) I love my emblem, and I am periodically active.
I have a Twitter

Bungie.net's activity could be best described as a wave, with each game release activity spikes as new members interested in the game flock to post, discuss, ask and complain about the new release. This has been obvious (in my own history on the site) with the release of Halo 3, ODST and Reach. Most of these members rarely leave the forum that pertains to the game, but some indeed do.
After a few months after release the hype about each game is lessened, the traffic within that particular forum slows, and members activity drops off. We are in one of these dips now. What is left after these spikes is a core group of members who , after each release are supplementd by those members who leave their main forum. These remaing members come to know each other, come to (hopefully) respect each other, and may even make contact through other outlets, such as twitter.
This core is the strongest aspect of the community, and the fact that they are constantly supplemented by newer members ensures there survival.
They are the core of the community, and are getting stronger, and all the more awesomer. Without them , the community would nowhere near be as great.

“Oh, it’s a little bit of everything, it’s the mountains, it’s the fog, it’s the news at six o’clock, it’s the death of my first dog, it’s the angels up above me, it’s the song that they don’t sing, It’s a little bit of everything.”
- Dawes, A little bit of everything

I like these lulls of activity as people often seem much more friendly and their posts much more thought-out and on-topic.

I also particularly like all of the community oriented posts that pop up here during these lulls (such as this one).

Its because people start recognising each other because there are less of us, so they start to get to know each other.

I think it's beneficial. I think it gives the community a sense of camaraderie since it now only consists of those who chose to stay.

Of course, the time between Halo 3 and Reach didn't seem very quiet to me.

Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

I agree. These are the times I enjoy the most, if only because I get to "know" our peers and get a more personal feel.

I am finally getting to know people! I also enjoy the speculation period before a game is released, when everyone is throwing ideas around.

Definitely! It's surprising how we'll our community speculates. At least, prior to the new game forum turning into a flaming cesspit just after release, but that's neither here nor there - sometimes it can be loads more fun than pre-release.

We're acually surprisingly accurate, i think we correctly predicted a few of Reach's features. Holograms for one.

I was a finalist :P

Yep, the number of people I have gotten to know during this 'low tide' is substantially high.

I feel that games are also not the sole contributor (although it is the main one), but school and teaching periods as well. There has been a considerable drop in activity late at night (and certain parts of the day), especially now that July/August has ended.

Nice thread.

Eat raw meat.
Punch a bear in the face.

If you don't know who I am, the feeling is mutual.

Was anyone here around a lot before Halo 3? That's when I came around and holy catfish Batman was that cool. Is was amazing how many friendly people there were and how people were willing to share their hopes and dreams towards the new Halo title...

Later, the Halo 3 forum became nothing but people whining about the BR, Guardian (which actually was a hated map for awhile), Equipment, the lack of Blood Gulch, etc.

Yeah, I agree with the sentiment that the lulls between releases is the best time around Bnet. Especially now that a lot of the whiners complaining about X and Y in Reach are gone, it's refreshing to see an established community with only the longtime members around.

Dead Mans Hand-Always Loaded.

I WAS SOCK

Tru7h.

I have met so many cool community members through PAX and private groups and such, but its easiest to remember all the members you see around times like this, since you see said names so much more often ^_^

You imply a level of control over Halo: Reach matchmaking that we no longer have. Or, in your vernacular, it isn't our shiznit anymore.

Active 9/1/11, Heroic 12/25/12

It's great recognizing members on the forums and seeing high and low tides of the site, reminds me why I don't leave these forums.

All this analyzation and dramatic horse -blam!- is just lame.

I've noticed this as well. There are those kinds of members that are here for a couple days/weeks/months, and then they are gone. Then, there is us, the core of the community. The ones who stay, even though there may be no news to talk about.
