I can see where Jonse is coming from. It's just strange to see such a big gaming company helping people out in a marketplace that's dominated by simple games that are similar to what you can play for free on the internet anyway.

Crimson looks good, though. Maybe Bungie's influence can raise the bar.

the iPad is not a movie theater, either.

They call me The Raptor due to my extreme interest in dinosaurs specifically velociraptor.

I played it and I can confirm that it is, in fact, a game. A game that you can play on the iPad.

Furthermore, I'm not wearing pants.

You can also play a game on a watch sometimes. That's beside the point.

You can play games on a table. A table is not a game.

You can play games in a playgorund. A playground is not a game.

Yeah, I don't know about that...
But playing it on an iPad, it seems that an iPhone screen would be incredibly limiting and challenging for this game. It would make everything so tiny. They would almost have to change it, completely to work WELL on an iPhone.

All very true (I'm mostly just upset because I can't play it <_<).

But still, it doesn't seem like they'd make anywhere near enough to make this venture worth while by only making it for iPad...

Well, that is why I created another thread about what is really smart and interesting about this game.
It most definitely seems to be relying on people investing in the long-term story and adventures. Which WOULD make it worth-while and would make it a really novel approach. Different than the DLC method of creating an ongoing revenue stream with a single game or title...
But yes. It does seem that an iPad only customer base is fairly limited. Then again, there are a lot of iPad only apps and games, so it's got to be worth it in the long run.
But, it definitely shows, the quality of the game benefits from being so obviously developed for an iPad.
But I do hear you. It's a fun game and I wish everyone who wanted to play it could on the devices they own.

That's a good point. Especially from an indie developer, if they're only focusing on one platform, it's bound to be well developed.

Yes, eventually. It isn't that nobody listens. It's that it is difficult to comment on the quality of the game, or how it is similar or dissimilar from what is now available on the iPad until it can be seen and compared.
The game right now is most certainly designed to run perfectly on an iPad. I have questions how it would translate (or, to your point, how it WILL translate) to much smaller screens. If it is the same game, on a smaller screen, the quality will ineviteably suffer. I think it would almost have to be redesigned as something significantly different than what is played on the iPad.

True. I think the only solution is (unless its in the game already. A zoom in ability with the "pinch" technique so that the ships would be big enough to allow for competent maneuverability within the game.

And then for some of the buttons maybe a bottom bar with all the buttons on it as opposed to having them on the places where they are now all about the screen. And the PC conversion shouldn't be too hard considering the screen would be bigger. But yeah, I'm curious to see how it will be converted to the smaller iOS devices.

Actually, the way it is now, it is more of a pinch out functionality, because I'm pretty sure that by default you start zoomed all the way in, and just zoom out to better navigate and plan your movements...
But still. You are right, they would have to change some things in terms of how to select specific actions for each vessel you are controlling to really optimize it.
It's a great game. Like I said earlier, I look forward to people with different devices being able to enjoy it.

"Wake me...when you need me."

I can see where you are coming from OP. I think you might should have further qualified your statement by saying "It is not a dedicated gaming platform."

“Oh, it’s a little bit of everything, it’s the mountains, it’s the fog, it’s the news at six o’clock, it’s the death of my first dog, it’s the angels up above me, it’s the song that they don’t sing, It’s a little bit of everything.”
- Dawes, A little bit of everything

I have several friends who game on the iPad, it most definitely is a platform as much as the gameboy was and is a platform.

Technically anything that is a computer can be a gaming device. We have iPod games, iPhone games, Windows phone 7, PS1, PS2, PS3, xbox, xbox 360, nintendo, Macintosh devices, computers, ect. can all be used as gaming devices because all a game simply is a code run on the computer device. Obviously a game isn't simple to make but is really just a string of codes used to make it. Oh well as long as a player feels the game is playable then the player will play it. Not our fault you feel an over sized iPod touch isn't a game device.

He's obviously not talking about it technically. I think he just feels like most do, that the controls on the iPad are terribad.
I feel the controls on the 360 are terribad .... Doesn't mean it isn't a gaming device. Now does it? ....

well, singling out the "controls" on an iPad is a bit crazy. It's a new consideration for game developers - mobile gaming on a touch screen. I think there is a lot of potential there. Sure, it isn't going to be the same as holding a controller with 17 buttons, but that doesn't mean it's inherently "bad". It just is a different sort of interface for gaming.
I think that in the case of Crimson, the controls are intuitive and are good.
You don't need a massive controller to play the game.
You also don't need a controller or more buttons than fingers to have a good gaming experience.

If a Grunt has a sticky stuck to his head, and no one is around to see or hear it, does it still run in circles screaming,"Get it off, Get it off !"?

A.K.A. Queso Man

I also wanted to add that I play the original Sonic the Hedgehog on my iPod all the time whenever I'm without wifi, and I love it. The controls are great because you adapt to it over time. Just like a controller.

If tablets and smart phones aren't gaming platforms, then why are Sony and Nintendo incorporating touch screens into the WiiU and Playstation Vita?

Why not make it for iPad? There are A LOT of popular games on phones and what-not?

  • 09.02.2011 7:56 PM PDT

Bungie are God/s.

Posted by: Jonse
Why is it being endorsed as one?

Shouldn't Bungie be supporting independent PC or XBLA developers, something like that?

Furthermore, who here has actually played this game? Who here actually has an iPad?

The iPad is definitely a gaming platform. There are over thousands of games for it. Just because you don't have an iPad doesn't give you the right to be an ignorant douche bag.

I have played the game and it is really fun. I played it for about an hour straight. Bungie did a good job and I'm grateful they gave it to us for free and didn't me have to pirate it. No pun intended....
