Subject: Is "forum copping" allowed?

In my opinion, it defeats the purpose of having moderators, and shouldn't be allowed.

Since the game forums have collapsed, there's been a lot of Reach related posts in the Bungie forums by members who don't know how to get to the proper forum (or who don't even know it exists).

So, someone will ask a question about the game, and will be bombarded by replies that say "Wrong forum" or "This goes in the Reach forum". I don't see a problem when someone will answer the question and then add a link to the proper forum, but most of the time this doesn't happen. I feel that it's just off topic and it isn't helping anyone.

As stated in the rules:
"Do not post off-topic in any forum or thread."

So, while the thread may be in the wrong forum, I feel that posts that "forum cop" are off topic as well.

This is my 2 cents anyway.

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

Only if your doing it wrong.

Being polite and giving them a link to the correct forum and/or answering them would be the accepted way to forum cop.

If it's a nonsense post, the best thing a "forum cop" could do is report and not post in it.

I agree, and I'm pretty sure forum copping is not allowed. (if you're doing it wrong) There's a strong difference between helping someone out and trying to enforce rules, most of the time posting a link will get you on the good side.

Hello, I'm Mr AwesomePizza. I like pizza and I'm a man. Reasoning for the name. I like to listen to the classics of music, write poetry, play video games, and much much more. I'm always down for a nice chat, so please hit me up for some conversation.

People should just report and move on.
Or send a message to the user with the correct link to the correct forum to post their thread in.

Why is telling someone where to post who doesn't know a bad thing? It's helpful to them and ends the off topic thread.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

The consensus seems to be that forum copping is allowed, provided the forum cops are not being jerks about it. The "play nice" thing seems to be the litmus test for how forums cops are dealt with.

Forum copping is not allowed as I have seen people being banned for it. Of course it depends highly upon the moderator's own judgement and so some members might get away with it while others might not.

I don't see how being helpful and pointing someone in the right direction is forum copping at all, however. Once the OP of the thread is shown the correct place for their thread, their original thread will die and all potential off topic posting will die with it.
Even if it were forum copping, I reckon that would be a form of forum copping that would be allowed since it actually prevents further off topic posting.

They aren't always off-topic, some still manage to post an on-topic response.

Because most of the time, the person who posted in the wrong forum only did so because they don't know how to get to the proper forum. Telling them where to go won't help much if they don't know how to get there.

I almost never see people linking others to the proper forum, only telling them that their thread is in the wrong forum.

I don't think I worded that properly, I meant that moderators are supposed to be the ones to point mislead users in the right direction. Moderation doesn't refer only to warning and banning.

Personally, I think there is a line between being helpful.. and forum copping. It depends how far the person takes it. If they just tell the person that made the mistake where to post next time, link the forum, etc. and then move on I don't see the problem. It's when the person stays in the thread starts to be a "know-it-all" is when things start to become shaky. This is just my opinion though.

Key

Someone from the Community Forum just got a ban for Forum Copping by an anonymous Forum Ninja... Forum copping is not allowed.

So you're saying we shouldn't be allowed to help other users find the right forum. You mean being helpful is wrong in this instance?

Yes but only do it correctly.

If someone unknowingly posts in the wrong place, redirect them with a link to the proper forum.

If its something bad, just don't post anything and report the post, I use the Mod Finder and PM them because its faster. You sometimes get a thank you and that warm fuzzy feeling on the inside.

Racism isn't wrong if it's funny.

No. Forum copping is not allowed.

I received a ban form Foman for forum copping once. It actually falls under the harassment section of The Rules. If you're not a Mod, you don't really have the right to tell someone what they are doing is wrong. You can point them to the rules or notify a Moderator, but it is ultimately up to the Mods to decide what to do.

So no. Don't forum cop.

That's not what I'm saying.

Say a new user makes a post about Reach in the community forum. Now say the first reply is "Wrong forum". How is that helpful? How is the new user supposed to know where to go?

I don't have a problem with linking to someone to the right forum. I was talking about posts like the one above that aren't really helpful.

Hey, now!

This is officially either the greatest or worst thing to ever happen to Star Wars. I'm going with the former.

I think it depends on what you're doing. If you're helping someone out that's confused in a polite manner, then I think you're fine, but if all you do is post "wrong forum", you aren't helping the situation, in fact you're making it worse.

I always try to put some input into the topic stated in the OP, then let them know that they should re-post the topic in the correct forum. That's helpful.

I think forum cops look for misplaced threads and wrongful posts more than they put into a discussion. Copping is their focus and they normally aren't doing it in a helpful sense, more defensive than helpful.

I'm fine with a few correct forum cops once and a while. But when you get a forum topic that is in the wrong forum and one user post "wrong forum" and then five users after him post the same thing. That pisses me off.

The Reach forum is still there, and it's purpose is (you guessed it) discussing Reach.

As long as they're no rude about it, there's no problem.

I lol'd at the absurd miscommunication that occurs whenever dibbs post something. Perhaps his brain is so highly evolved that he can no longer clearly communicate with lesser life forms, even among his own species.

Aren't we in a way forum copping now? We're debating what constitutes forum copping as well as the punishments that should be levied out for doing it...and we aren't moderators.
