Subject: Is "forum copping" allowed?

Why not stop by my File Share while you're here?

~Long Live Halo 2
Only regret is I didn't play more of it.

If you haven't noticed by now, I'm sort of a jerk.

As long as people know what they're doing and do it right, then I don't see a problem with it. If they just post a one liner, then it's annoying.

this forum should be locked to be honest, do what you think is right with the correct information and move on, let the wrong forum cops learn for themselves

Giggity Giggity Goo - Quagmire

Isn't there a rule that states forum cops are not allowed?

  • 09.03.2011 1:51 PM PDT

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

No, keep your hands to yourself. Pervert.

*Reads OP*

Oh. Well it usually involves posting in spam threads which is never encouraged. I don't think it's something that is a cool thing to do by anyone's standards.

I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

I'll admit that I'll redirect stray posters, but I always include a link to where they need to be going. Then again, I'm a forum cop that doesn't play by the rule... not even my own rules.

Do you want my badge and gun?

Stop banning me please.

My two cents is free, who sent you sent for me?

If you're going to attempt to help other members by "forum copping" make sure you're doing it correctly. Don't give false information or mislead the forum-goer and certainly don't give the impression that you're an employee/moderator.

Furthermore, do it via private message. Posting simply bumps the topic in question and adds to derailment.

Honestly, I'd prefer it if you simply reported the post or shot a moderator a message if you feel it is urgent.

Whenever I see a thread that's in the wrong place I mostly post a link to the right place because if you don't some members we'll keep posting on it ,and posting on it even though it's a violation of the rules. Some of them don't report it ,and it takes more than one to go to the report QUE.

Yes, as long as you don't misguide them. I do it occasionally, but now I will tend to send PM's to users who post in the wrong forum.

Forum copping can easily be eliminated by simply removing the rules.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

Wrong forum, rawr!

In all seriousness...it needs to be done. Or else people are just going to continue commenting and bumping the thread. Plus, it may help some new members.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

Yeah, like Duardo and Revan said, forum copping when it's correct is, at best, a double-edged sword. While you may be giving users good and useful information, you're also posting off-topic within a thread and bumping an inappropriate thread back up to the top of the forum (thus pushing down other, more appropriate threads).

That said, we generally don't warn or ban for it despite these problems because the information can be helpful.

Incorrect forum copping is a serious violation, however. In addition to the off-topic posting and bumping mentioned earlier, an incorrect forum copping post also misleads other forumgoers -- not just the OP, but anybody who might happen to run across that thread and not be familiar with the forum rules. Including and especially new users and/or users who don't post much. This can lead to other off-topic threads, other users getting warnings or bans, and even more clutter on the forums.

For this reason, if you forum cop, you should be 100% positive you're right. Incorrect forum copping almost always earns a ban in order to minimize the damage done (i.e., to hide the post so that new/inexperienced users cannot see it or be misled by it).

Obviously, as others have mentioned, the best recourse is to not post at all and simply hit the "report" button. Or just leave the thread alone -- in most forums, a moderator will see it and deal with it in due course.

So, someone will ask a question about the game, and will be bombarded by replies that say "Wrong forum" or "This goes in the Reach forum". I don't see a problem when someone will answer the question and then add a link to the proper forum, but most of the time this doesn't happen. I feel that it's just off topic and it isn't helping anyone.

As stated in the rules:
"Do not post off-topic in any forum or thread."

So, while the thread may be in the wrong forum, I feel that posts that "forum cop" are off topic as well.

This is my 2 cents anyway.

When I do inform someone they posted in the wrong forum, it's generally through a politely worded private message with a link to the proper forum and a brief explanation as to avoid bumping the off-topic thread.

But most of the time I just leave it for the moderators anyway.

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

Just did it not to long ago. Someone asked about the Member Titles, I pointed them in this direction and towards the Title thread. Is that acceptable?

  • 09.03.2011 10:37 PM PDT

“Oh, it’s a little bit of everything, it’s the mountains, it’s the fog, it’s the news at six o’clock, it’s the death of my first dog, it’s the angels up above me, it’s the song that they don’t sing, It’s a little bit of everything.”
- Dawes, A little bit of everything

I see your two cents, and will call.

I believe that if someone posts a specific question about Halo: Reach (for example) in the wrong forum, that a user should be allowed to reply with something along the lines of this:
Hey there, this forum is intended for Community discussion and your question best fits in the Halo: Reach Forum.
However, if the user knew the answer to the question, I believe that he/she should add it after what I described above.

It all boils down to this: I believe that directing someone to the right place, wherein they would have their question answered, is the right thing to do. Simply saying, "wrong forum" is wrong and should be punished as it is spam, mean, and doesn't help at all.

As I am tired, I feel like using some pretty stupid comparisons, so here goes:
If I walk into a bookstore and, in a thick foreign accent, ask an employee there if they have any frozen pizzas, I would probably be told that I want a grocery store instead and that the bookstore does not, in fact, sell frozen pizzas.

Something to mention, if it has not been already, is that "incorrect forum copping" is most certainly against the rules...whether it be a typo or not (they should be able to read minds...that would solve a lot of problems).

I've never heard of somebody having a better understanding, and more knowledge than another becoming a matter of being a " Forum Cop " that's just ridiculous. Better knowledge always walks to the front of the line. The person with less information strays to the back of the line.

So would it be entirely wrong to be on topic of the thread and correct them? Or does that defeat the entire purpose of PMing the user.

My problem with "forum copping" is not only one person does it in a thread, but several over a time span.

Ok, so if I am first to reply and I know an answer, would it be correct to briefly answer the question, state that it is off-topic, and link to the correct forum, and click the report button?

SB-117

This is just my opinion of course, but typically, members are best off promoting positive parts of the community, rather than attempting to fix the negative parts.

When it comes down to it, the members are far more important than the admins, or the moderators, etc. Moderators just keep things tidy, the members make the place what it is.

If someone wants to offer friendly advice (preferably via private message to prevent bumping), then they're free to do so. It may even be helpful to newcomers. But I think that shining examples of how to use the forums are typically more productive than those pointing out how not to use the forums.

So, that's just a random thought on the matter, and I post it simply because I've seen this many times over. Sometimes users fall into the trap of trying to make the community better, and wind up forgetting why they joined in the first place.

tl;dr, the answer to the subject title is yes, however, I wouldn't over do it. Bungie.net is more than just a spam pit, so there are alternate ways to promote a strong community.

OP - You're a dumbass with the reading comprehension skills of a second grader.

Can someone tell me what's wrong with these two, this made me LOL hard.

There's a difference between being helpful and being a forum cop. Here's an example:

Poster A: Hey Flood! (Posted topic in Community forum) Look at this article on how to live longer! (link)

Poster B (Helpful): This isn't in the right forum, here is the [link to flood] because it's not related to the community.

Poster C (Forum Copping): This isn't in the right forum. Go to the flood before I get someone to lock your thread or ban you for posting this in the Community forum when it doesn't relate to the community at all.

Similar, but there's a subtle difference.
