Title for reference.

Honestly I've seen this argument presented against Noble Team numerous times, yet it's one that is completely unfair and redundant. It can be defeated in two points.

1. That "single planet" was Reach. Noble Team couldn't save it because it was destined to fall, if you are a Halo fan that is Canon 101.

2. Noble Team couldn't save Reach, yet neither could the 30+ Spartan-IIs who went to Reach. So does that mean Spartan-IIs are now terrible despite failing to protect Reach?

So, can someone tell me why that argument is valid? Even if you despise Noble Team with a unholy passion not seen since Sonic fanboys raged over his new voice actor, you have to admit that argument is crap.

Or the fact that the fleet attacking reach is 50 times the size of the one at earth? Plus Earth had way more defenses than Reach. So technically, Noble team did a better job than the chief did. Given the amount of enemies per invasion.

I mean, they did manage to drive off an force at SWORD Base, take out a Supercarrier, safely evac civilians, and ensure Keyes got to leave Reach. Say how it violates canon all you want, but they didn't just sit around doing nothing.

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Reach was destined to fall? Now you're not looking at it from within the universe.

And that has any relevance how? Red Team failed to secure Reach, we've known that for 10 years. How was it any surprise Noble couldn't save Reach? It shouldn't be that much of a surprise.

That has relevance because in these sorts of discussions you can't look at the situation as someone existing in the real world, because then it's a skewed perspective. You need to look at what's being presented from within it's own universe. Noble Team didn't fail to save Reach because Reach had to fall, Reach fell because they couldn't save it, along with every other Spartan on Reach.

It's like saying, "Oh well Master Chief would win because he's the main character," or "Well of course the Brutes couldn't have saved the Covenant because the Covenant had to lose for a satisfying ending".

Well, what else would I expect? I knew Reach would fall, and I perfectly understood why. The Covenant royally destroyed the UNSC defenses and swarmed the planet like locusts.

No one was surprised, everyone knew it was going to fall. That's not what this is about is it? We're talking about how Noble Team could not save Reach.

Herping your derp.

Its possible that Noble Team could save a planet, but depending on the planet is the main issue.

Reach wasn't going to last long what with the entire armada of the Covenant taking it apart piece by piece.

Earth was a well-kept secret, which would mean that it has very high defenses.

Six Spartans left with the duty to prevail through an entire armada of Covenant, seems very, very unlikely. They could have survived for a while. If they were against the Flood, they could have stopped it for a while. But to save a planet that's on the mission list of extermination by a genocidal race of aliens that feel no sympathy for their prey, they wouldn't survive.

Lol Jason Griffith and Chris Redfield.

  • 09.04.2011 12:11 PM PDT

well, Noble Team had 6 Spartans. Master Chief, while being totally awesome, is still only ONE spartan

  • 09.04.2011 6:46 PM PDT

The whole army of spartans didn't save reach.

  • 09.04.2011 6:50 PM PDT

FINALLY someone who i agree with! how could 6 Spartan-III's or whatever they are save an ENTIRE planet? especially one with and advanced alien race spraying molten plasma onto it. The Spartan-II's on Reach not only survived falls from orbit, and destroyed a covenant ship with a "nuclear football", they also saved Halsey and got out of there

  • 09.04.2011 6:57 PM PDT

They probably did save a planet before. Remember when Thom died? They might have saved that planet considering they got off alive.

It wasn't their job to stop Reach from falling exactly. They were able to destroy a super carrier, evacuate a bunch of civilians, and get Cortana to the Pillar of Autumn. I'd say that they did their job.

Honestly, I believe that the reason Reach was lost was because the UNSC and ONI weren't prepared to fight the fully prepared Covenant invasion army.

The chances of saving Reach were so small you would have a better chance of winning the lottery without a ticket.

The reason we see later victories by the Human Race is because at those times the UNSC and ONI were fully prepared, most likely because of the dark reminder of what happened to Reach.

In that case, the same priciples apply.

How can you expect 6 Spartan IIIs to save an entire planet. You must remember, Noble was sent is an investigation crew, not a strike force prepared to fight to the death.

And even if they were prepared to fight, it was against untrained, easy target rebels... not an entire army of much more advanced, battle hardened alien soldiers who were willing to fight to the death because of their religion.

OP: I agree 100%. Not much they could do really, not even 100 Spartans, or 200. Noble Team didn't 'suck'.

EDIT: 300 would put up a fight though, dun dun dun DUN! SPARTAAAA Sorry had to do it, had to beat someone else to it.

Gamma Company was deployed shortly after the Fall of Reach, imagine if they were deployed before and sent straight to Reach. "The best Spartans ever." claimed Kurt. I'm sure they would have been a great asset.

Yeah, they were. Still don't think it would have been enough though.

Still sad that it had to fall... I wonder what the story would be like if at least 50% of the planet remained intact. Insane how the Covenant possesses so many troops. But those damn ships are powerful.
