This isn't a big deal to me, but every time I look at waypoint or some other video/artical that talks about the master chief I can't help but think about wither or not Bungie intended you to PLAY as master chief, or you are master chief. In my opionion, the player is master chief.

And even if the player was not inteded to be him, I still thing of myself as him because I have a deep voice, and I like the armor he wears.

Like I said, I just wanted to ask the community what they thought.

That was the impression I got from it. He was just a nameless soldier that you never saw the face of, so that could very well be what Bungie intended. The books kind of ruined the idea for me though

Didn't read it carefully enough, huh?

OT: They did. I can't link you to something with Bungie saying this, but I do recall them talking about it at some point. They were wanting the player to feel the Halo Universe as though they themselves were inside of that. They wanted Master Chief to have no real face so that you pictured yourself as the Chief. That's also why they didn't give him much of a personality or much lines throughout the games.

I'm thinking that a lot of that will change with the new trilogy. The entire focus of the trilogy will be around John and his destiny. It would be hard to make a game completely about a character's destiny yet keep him from having a personality of his own. Well, a strong enough personality to crush the feeling that you are the character.

Well said my freind.

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

I do not like the protagonist being used as a conduit to put the player in the game, that's just a shoddy excuse to leave out character development IMO. If you're going to have a character in the middle of a war who experiences and performs actions that will change everything, I expect to see him do it as a character, not an archetype.

Bungie are very contradictory with John. One minute they're saying he's a conduit for the player, the next they're talking about developing his relationship with Cortana which will have an emotional impact on him.

The only time their "conduit character" has worked is ODST.

This is hilarious.

On topic, the main purpose of a silent protagonist in a videogame, which Master Chief is during most actual gameplay, is to allow the player to more deeply immerse themselves in the world. They're silent so you can fill the experience with your thoughts and actions, making the game more immersive.

So yes, the player is Master Chief in the games... but he's also a fairly well-developed character outside of the videogames so it depends on whether you mean Chief in the games of Chief as a character or Chief outside of the games or...

It's complicated.

Something smells fishy...

I believe in order to become the Master Chief Halo would have to be some kind of virtual reality game.

Or we could have had neural implants or something. The only down part is if you die in Halo you die in real life.
