Subject: The smaller Bungie communities, outside of Bnet

Well, a long time ago in a galaxy far...Wait, wrong intro.

So, the story goes that not long over 5 years ago I created a a group for bnet regulars to play an online game called ogame. Those that were around MBT & ODST Recon around that time may remember it. This group at it's peak consisted of about 80 bnet regulars who played this game as one group. It was great fun, everyone kept in contact and we all helped each other out, had great banter as a group. Over time the group numbers dropped but the membership stabilized at around 20. After I left it was taken over by another member and ran with great distinction. As far as I'm aware the group dropped to about 16 for a year or so, then down to about 8 for it's remaining time.

The group recently disbanded after 5 years together.

This got me thinking about other similar groups that have been forged by bnet. I was wondering what else is out there that has it's roots in our community here; who else has been involved in projects like this and what are their stories?

It certainly makes me very nostalgic but also glad that i did sign up here and stick around. Any similar stories would be greatly received if you guys have them!

They just decided it was time for something new, i guess. The game universe there is persistent state but they add new universes every couple of months or so. This means that the older universes (such as the one this group was in) were drained of players and not replenished very much at all. Makes the game quite dull after a while. Anyway, that's not the point.

Stories people!

Why did they disband that site?

If you read it was because of lack of activity in the recent years.

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

The site wasn't disbanded, it was an alliance, or a clan if you will, that a bunch of Bungie members created to compete with the thousands of other players playing. I played for a while and was part of the Bungie.wing alliance. It is sad to see it fall.

I have also taken place in similar things such as the Bungie Nation States group and whatnot.

Well that sucks.

No I was never apart of any forums.

I remember years ago I used to troll the Runescape forums. Those were the only other forums I have ever been to.

"Nothing in the 'Verse can stop me."

Anyway, I've been a part of a forum called Real 7alk since early September of 2008. The site is still up and running but not without its own bumps and downsides. The group has been reduced to an active roster of only 20 or so members and the activity is slow on a good day.

It started out with Halo podcasts with community guests that ranged from BNet mods to Machinima directors like DigitalPh33r and Phurion and a Community Chapter. Later it got its own site and grew out of its podcast roots. Members left, moderators changed, admins stepped down, and a lot of hats were switched. We dabbled in gaming news and had an active blog which later shut down.

The site died after the admins couldn't afford the server anymore and then got revived later on. To this day the forums still remain as well as old memories and history of the tough times.

The site means a ton to me and I've met so many good friends because of it. It will be a tough day to see it go considering the activity rate...

Haha, you know I just found This and had a wee read around. Nostalgia for the ultimate win! Makes me wish I could go back and do it all again. I've simply forgotten how much I enjoyed the diplomacy side of that game!

Well there's Blackwaterops (please sign up >_>).

It was a pretty big Halo group here on B.net three or so years ago so the people in charge figured that an offsite with focus on all games instead of just Halo would be in order. We never managed to get everyone to follow so the population was cut in half right there. Not enough ads, a few mishaps and factors we couldnt have anticipated have further reduced the population down to 1800'ish with around 120-150 active members per day.

The plan now seems to be to go back to the roots, add more incentive for the members by reinstating the EXP armory next to the already existing achievements and ranks and switch some other things around. It's an organized and fast site where new members easily can rise to the top through positive contributions on the forums.

Unless things have changed we're currently looking for a qualified programmer to join the webteam (it's a vBulletin platform). Don't be a stranger.
