In regards to the argument in this thread, I've decided it would be a good idea to make a poll about the subject. Currently, the rules prohibit "posts in any language other than readable and intelligible English." Some people feel that since the Community is a worldwide one, that users should be able to make posts in any language of their choosing. Others feel that since English is the native language of this forum, that all users must speak English or break the rules.

Personally, I think that since English is what Bungie prefers, that users should speak English or run the risk of being banned. Does the Community think that other languages should be allowed? Why or why not?

OH GOD, THERE ISN'T A FIGHT GOING ON HERE OVER LANGUAGES WE'RE ALLOWED TO USE ON THE SITE, IS THERE?

The rules don't allow posts that aren't in "clear and intelligible English."
/argument

Obviously that's what the -blam!-ing rules say. We're arguing about the possibility of changing the rule. I don't need to blindly accept the fact that the rule is there. Debates shouldn't be null and void simply because there are rules that disallows the subject matter of the debate being allowed.

And its not insanely out of the ballpark to believe something like a debate of sorts on the forums. It's a completely civilized one.

Make choices, and don't look back.

Not everyone speaks English, and in this case, there were others who can speak/write in Spanish to answer the user's question. Perfectly fine in my book.

I don't think we come across too many threads in a different language. Well in my experience, it's not enough to cause a problem. Just a thread here or there.

But... everything is in English. The Company speaks English. English is its official language. Of course that's the language used here. It's what most people understand. It's what Bungie Employees understand. It's what you use to type here, for the most part.

I don't go to some Japanese Website and demand they have an English translation. Shoot I've gone to Chinese websites and just winged it. But just because they get a couple people that speak another language doesn't mean they should compromise their forums by allowing it, no?

Don't the forum rules say "English Only"?

- Posts in any language other than readable and intelligible English.

Counts as Spam.

OT: Yes, I think it should be English only.

This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends;
Not with a bang but a whimper.

I don't care either way, but I feel it's important to say that it doesn't matter what we think because Bungie will do whatever they want.

  • 09.05.2011 2:50 PM PDT

Should be kept English only to avoid the obvious problems.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

I'd rather most everything here be in English, so I can join in on the convo. That doesn't mean there shouldn't be something that can bridge the gap between Bungie's English speaking fans and the rest of the world. I'd like to accommodate other languages, but I honestly don't know how to do so.

I certainly don't think users should be banned for posting in other languages. Or even warned, unless they're clearly up to no good.

I do approve of the other portion of that rule. Intelligible English, at least for those who speak English is a necessity. I can do without 1337 threads and other similar, stupid, wastes of time.

There are always chapters that could be dedicated to other languages, if people make them. It would probably require some extra work to point non-english speakers int hat direction though.

Languages other than English on this site would just cause clutter. A vast majority of the users here speak English only.

If you still want to be a part of the site, but don't speak English.... use a translator.

  • 09.05.2011 2:54 PM PDT

Wake me, when you need me.

It should be kept English only. Since the majority of people that come here speak English as their native tongue, it should stay that way. And those who are are foreign usually understand English anyways.

Thing is, that can VERY EASILY lead to terrible posts (in a grammatical sense) which is also against the rules.

There are really good reasons why most forums are restricted to English only.

The post must be "intelligible" as well, and translators aren't always so great with grammatical specifics. Although it'd just be douchey of a Ninja to ban someone just because they weren't "smart enough."

It is, I'm asking if the Community thinks it should be, as opposed to allowing users to speak other languages.

My opinion: What harm do foregin (mostly spanish) posts do anyway? The amount of them are very sparse and even when there is one, there's always one person or another who has the ability to speak high school level spanish and has the ability to say "En el futuro, si puedes, deberias escribir en ingles". Translation: "In the future, if you can, you should post in english" as well as respond to the OP in spanish or whatever other language the OP is in.

I think it should be kept English only. People who don't speak English could just use an online translation website. That would lead to slightly bad English, but it can't be much worse than some of the stuff we already see on these forums.

Of course, the counter argument is that people that don't understand the language could do the same, but I'm betting that more people speak English on here than otherwise. Not to mention that the employees using this website speak English.

You are misunderstanding. Users can copy and paste Bungie news and even forum topics into translators, and they can get a rough copy in their given language.

I am not suggesting that they create 12 paragraph threads. However, a short and simple reply would cause no problems. (As translators can usually translate smaller, less complicated sentences into another language intelligibly.)

I suppose, but where would you draw the line? There must be a line, this is Bnet.

How about having separate forums for other languages?
