Subject: Was ODST a good concept for a game?

Eat raw meat.
Punch a bear in the face.

If you don't know who I am, the feeling is mutual.

A lot of my friends tell me that ODST sucked. I usually get disappointed at that point, because ODST is definitely my favourite Halo title! I loved the atmosphere, the music, and the story far more than any game I've ever played (okay, the Fallout games are close).

Out of curiosity, would it be a good idea if Bungie explored a true sequel or a spiritual successor to the ODST idea? Even if the Covenant and the UNSC aren't involved, would a game with the same amount of intrigue, mystery, and darkness do well? My biggest complaint about ODST is that it wasn't given the credit it deserved. Yes, Bungie did know that it was going to be a smaller game from the start, but it grew into something amazing!

Imagine if Bungie waited to make Reach and instead put a whole three years into ODST: maybe there would be more clue missions, maybe a larger New Mombasa, maybe more things to do around the city, maybe a deeper look into Dare and Buck's relationship, maybe more interaction between Dutch / Mickey / Romeo, maybe some backstory into the Rookie, and maybe there would be a Sniper mission where enemies would DIE from headshots (okay, I'll be honest, Romeo's mission irked me SOLELY because the Brutes took more than one headshot). Based on what my imagination produces, I'd buy that game six times.

Okay, I know that Bungie doesn't have the Halo IP, but that doesn't stop them from exploring the same ideas: a mystery, missing teammates, a dark night, a guiding helper, finding clues, etc. Frankly, there's enough FPS games with just nothing up shooting; ODST could have been a game that broke that mould and created something completely new! Halo meets L.A. Noire!

Even if Bungie never wants to go back to ODST and have Achronos ban me for my insolence, could they at the very least add more saxophone to everything they do?

ODST campaign was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. Not even joking.

It was immersive.
I cared about the characters.
I connected with the main character.
I thoroughly enjoyed every level I played.

Achronos: And what's this about a "design team" I've been hearing? Apparently stosh is so awesome he's now considered a "team".

I thought ODST was a great game and I would love to see more like it. I also believe that if they spent more time on it, it could have been a great survival shooter. I personally have not seen many games with the same feel as ODST.

No other game Bungie made feels like it. I think ODST doesn't felt like a halo game at all.

I run Skirmish!!!

i completely agree, ODST was underrated as i game and was not given enough credit... The whole feel for the game was amazing and i really liked the mystery/stealth aspect to it.. almost a tom clancy splinter cell game except with halo involved if you ask me..

ODST had great character development whereas reach did not...

"We live in a special time; the only time where we can observationally verify that we live in a very special time" - Lawrence Krauss.

I was a finalist :P

Bungie nailed the story for Halo CE and it was my favourite out of all the Halo titles. ODST was brilliant don't get me wrong, but Halo: CE was just that little bit better.

Stop banning me please.

I think Halo 2 had the best story

Is that a problem though?

If Halo stayed the same would you still love it?

Wake me, when you need me.

It's not my favorite piece of work, but I definitely liked it a lot. I still remember the night I won it in a local gamestop tourny. Good times.

Pffft! Screw this thread! *Does 180 spin and moon walks out of thread*

I agree. ODST is one of my favorite Halo games. It's not like the other Halo's. I think the people that DON'T like it are the same sheep that believe every Call of Duty game released is original. Overall, the game had GREAT music, and the gameplay felt slick. So different to other Halo's.

the only problem i have with mine is that it's unstable,[very shakey],so you'd need a tripod for it.

Just drink a beer and everything will be ok

Ahh. ODST.

I got it at midnight launch and only had 1 day to play it before I had to leave for a week. Possibly diminished my experience of the story but it was still great.

Firefight in ODST was truly amazing though.

Why hello there.

I loved ODST. The only thing I didn't like about it was the Rookie. He was just a horrible character in my opinion. I had tons of fun on the campaign and Firefight.

ODST has been the only Halo game where the character is completely up to the player's imagination.

I loved ODST but I don't know about a non-Halo ODST like game.

Hail Worm of Morgoth; well met again;
Die now and the darkness have thee; thus is
Túrin son of Húrin avenged.

Turin Turambar Dagnir Glaurunga

Yup, great concept.

They used the 'hub' idea very well and didn't over use areas too much. The mood and ambience was superb (good work Marty) throughout. The silenced weapons were a nice change and the visor mode when you're lean is just awesome :P

I loved ODST. The story and atmosphere were amazing, and the Firefight was brilliant. It would be amazing if Bungie were to do another game with the same sort of concept as ODST.

Hmmmm.... I never thought of it like that. He was just such a quite character. Even when asked a question, he didn't say a word.

Youngie by day Youngie by nature.....

Odst was easily the most atmospheric of the halo games, but i didn't like the new character models, felt a bit too cartoony. The music was again, amazing.

To me ODST was essentially a book where the story is given but the character is left entirely up to the person's imagination. Much like Dr Freeman from the Half-Life series.

What are we supposed to be discussing here?

"Nothing in the 'Verse can stop me."

The game was a bold move and would have been more well received if Microsoft would have let Bungie keep the planned $40 price tag.

Nonetheless I thought ODST wasn't bad, even if it was by no means a complete experience.

Hopefully we'll see less of that now Bungie are with Activision.....

I preferred ODST to Reach. I preferred the campaign and I would even rather have firefight than Reach's MM.
