Subject: Was ODST a good concept for a game?

What are we supposed to be discussing here?

"Nothing in the 'Verse can stop me."

It was purely a money making exercise from M$.

No it wasn't. It was a side project that was originally supposed to be Halo 3 DLC with then later was supposed to be a stand alone game with a $40 price tag. Mircosoft bumped the sale price to a full game without Bungie being able to do anything about it.

Bungie wanted to make it but in the end it just ended up getting milked for money. Nothing they could do about it.

I think it was a very good game. Everybody knows if it had multiplayer it would be one of the greatest with a mixture of halo 2 and 3. The campaign was solid, the new firefight gaming was awesome, and the use of characters is just great. I know it had it's flaws but come on think about it, what game didn't?

I loved the atmosphere, the music, and the story far more than any game I've ever played (okay, the Fallout games are close).

For me the Fallout games are better. Don't get me wrong I do think ODST had the best atmosphere for a Halo game. I also do think it had one of the best concepts out of all the Halo games. It is just that the Fallout series has a much more in depth story that Halo can't quite touch.

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Indeed. Halo 3 ODST is my second favorite Halo game, and the only thing I have against it, is that it should have had more time to develop. It only had one year, and I absolutely loved it; imagine had it had three years. I hate it when people say ODST sucked, they never give valid reasons. Everyone expected it to be a full blown game, similar to Halo 3.

I've always wanted a sequel to ODST. I really liked the characters, especially Buck.

A spiritual successor to ODST wouldint be bad, as long as Bungie can get right what they got with ODST.

It wasn't worth $60 really. Microsoft overpriced it.

ODST campaign was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. Not even joking.

It was immersive.
I cared about the characters.
I connected with the main character.
I thoroughly enjoyed every level I played.

Chief vs the scarab? I find that hard to believe to roundhouse boot the scarab's figurative emotion out of the gaming zone.

The game was a bold move and would have been more well received if Microsoft would have let Bungie keep the planned $40 price tag.
I have to agree with this. I think far too many people wrote the game off simply because of the increased price tag.

Personally, I love the game. In fact, I just got done playing through it all over again this weekend. Such good stuff.

“Oh, it’s a little bit of everything, it’s the mountains, it’s the fog, it’s the news at six o’clock, it’s the death of my first dog, it’s the angels up above me, it’s the song that they don’t sing, It’s a little bit of everything.”
- Dawes, A little bit of everything

I really liked the game. Even though I beat it in 4 hours on Legendary after I got it on launch night, I kept going back to it and still do.

I liked the characters and I felt more involved in the story that I did in any other Halo game. In all the other Halo games, I just could not identify with the Master Chief (or the Arbiter, for that matter) as they just seemed to be too powerful and too good. I am not that kind of person, I am a quite person and I really identified with The Rookie.

I would love to see another game like ODST from Bungie.

"I will show you how a true Prussian officer fights!"

"And i will show you where the iron crosses grow..."

- "Cross of Iron"

ODST's campaign was definitely up there on story. I loved it and it definitely deserves more recognition then it gets.

ISU Cyclones!

It was pretty good IMO. The big difference in atmosphere in everything was very enjoyable and of course every soundtrack Marty touches is gold and he had his grubby hands all over ODST and it showed.

The only complaint was that it wasn't enough content to warrant that 60$ price tag and that was totally Microsoft's fault, not Bungie's. It was probably one of the pushing factors that made them decide to buy their independence way back when.

It was still a good quality game, but the quantity... firefight was good but only a 4-5 hour campaign... I still don't regret getting it (that Halo 3 disk was very convenient not to mention) but the complaints of it being overpriced are quite warranted thanks to Microsoft.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

I found the idea/concept of the "story hub" where the Player Character has their own "mini-arc" that involves them encountering/discovering/reliving the storyline events of multiple characters to be a really interesting way to tell a story. It allowed for the development and insight into multiple characters, gave the voice actors and writers a chance to give these other characters decent backstory and depth, and (gameplay wise) allowed someone other than the Player Character to be a "specialist" in specific weapons/tactics/situations.

Personally I would have enjoyed it even more if there had been at least another episode per character and maybe even one or two with Dare. Hell, it might have been interesting to see things from the Superintendent's POV.

Additionally, I enjoyed Bungie's take on Sci-Fi-Marine-Noir. Marty's music gave it depth and emotion, and the (there if you look for it) inclusion of Sadie's story added even more dimension to the experience.

Flipping on signs for people to follow and watching everything through cameras sounds like it could get a bit boring. Wouldn't you rather be running around gunning stuff down?

Oh wait. This is you we are talking about. You are usually the one getting gunned down. I see why you might like the Supers point of view.

Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

Absolutely, ODST was what a large majority of the Halo Fanbase wanted - playing as a marine. In my opinion, it could have gone better (M$ not raising the price to a full game), but that's neither here nor there.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

Actually, imagine watching the invasion and occupation from the Super's POV and managing assets, evacuating people, attempting to minimize casualties and protect lives.

It could be a lot like a RTS, with garbage trucks, police units and indirect interaction with independent combat units.

You can make nearly anything into a game (just ask a 6 year old). The real challenge is making it into one that people enjoy playing.
