Is there any chance that you are literally -blam!-ting money?

I've been saving up for four years and my parents gave me $500 dollars for my birthday so no.

No, I mean, why oh why would you want to spend so much money on the best pc you can possible find at this moment if you can get a system that will be, let's say 15% slower but will cut the cost in half. For crying out loud, that's a $1000 CPU you got there! Think for a little bit.

I mean, if you really want to spend such a vast amount of money, then do it, but any smart guy knows that you never buy the newest of the newest when it comes to computers.

I'm trying to keep you from doing something you'll regret in 6 months.

The CPU isn't $1000, it's only $630

I'm holding off buying or upgrading your computer until Vista comes out because a lot of current hardware may not work on Vista or take advantage of some of it's advances.

If your hell-bent on buying something then that one shoud last you a while. One note of caution, take a good look at the layout of your motherboard and make sure there are no cards close to the CPU. That 120mm Zalman is going to take up a lot of real estate. At least keep the reciept and verify the return policies.

The x1900xt can run HDR, and AA at the same time. The Geforce 7*** series cannot.

The x1 series is totally -blam!- up, like every other ati card; the drivers are wank, the directx features are ballsed up and they break more often than they work! (3/4 of my ati cards in the past have broken, as has my only ati motherboard, i haven't touched an ati product since). Stick with the 7900GTX, it is the best card available atm.

Also; if you're looking for gaming, stick to the single core cpu rather than a dual core, they tend to be cheaper and perform slightly better for gaming, the only thing they're beaten in is multitasking. With a dual core cpu you could game and run a background task like a virus scan, burning a cd or encoding a dvd with little drop in performance if the applications are assigned to a core.

Don't listen to Elmicker, he is a fanboi. The 7900gtx is not worth the money. If you must get an Nvidia, get the 7900gt. Its $200 cheaper, and performs about 90% as good as the GTX.

Well yeah, but then it's not uber, is it? you need the X!!!!! /sarcasm. yeah, he's right, the performace difference will be negligable for the price difference.

The x1900xt is not a POS by the way Elmicker, please don't be a fanboi.

i wouldn't know on this one, i haven't touched any of the x1 series. Especially since i payed £200 for an x800xt and it blew up within 30 seconds of entering my case because the fan didn't work; then the manufacturer saying, oh, it's not our fault, it passed the test! and the retailer saying; talk to the manufacturer!

Dual cores ARE good for gaming. An 3800 x2 performs just as well, if not better than the standard single core 3200. The difference is the extra 2.0ghz core on the 3800. And Dual cores WILL be moved into the norm of computing. If you buy a single core you are going technologically backwards.

I never said they weren't good, it's just the single cores will perform slightly better because only one or two games are optimised for multithreading and also, until Vista, windows won't support multithreading either, so there'll be no advantage until then.

Essentially; go for whatever the -blam!- you want; until the software catches up with it, it's all the same.

For Carnage, Apply Within.

I have returned from the Untamed Lands. MOAP is dead.

I was gonna upgrade my pc too, but I'll just wait for windows vista.

I built my rig for around 1200.00, it's in my sig. I am very happy with my single core chip, and my 7800gt (factory overclocked) performs damn close to the 7800 gtx. The 7900 series came out 2 weeks after I bought my video card. Let me just say that I have been very happy with my new toy, by far the nicest pc I have ever owned.

Go for it, but take some of these guy's advice, you will be glad you did once it's said and done.

Thanks for all the help guys. I think I'll wait though, like many of you suggested.

EDIT:
I switched the 7900GTX for a 7900GT, saves about $200 dollars.

dont buy that aspire case, I have it and its a piece of -blam!-. Save some money and get a nice one like a lian li.

edit- also go for the big typhoon heatsink of the zalman. Its much better. I had that exact zalman and it was nice, but my friend gave me his big typhoon when he got a watercooling setup, and my temps dropped 8ºF.

and no the amd 64 x2 4800 is not $1000, its $630. Yea its still expensive, but who cares if he buys it. Just because you may not have the money doesn't mean you have to get angry at someone that does. Hell, I'd buy that exact same setup, but I just bought a new laptop. What are you talking about not buying the best stuff out? Why buy something that came out 6 months ago and inferior to a product that was just released? doesnt make sense, sorry i dont understand your logic.

You hardly even need AA at the resolutions the cards can run at. There are sooooo many pixels that it doesn't matter.

This should help you understand

For nearly the same performance get the 4400 x2, it has the same amount of Cache, and is only 200mhz slower per core. And forget the 7900gtx. Get the x1900xt.

- this is referring to the processor. The amd dual core 4400 (x2 4400). It has the same amount of cache, which is basically memory on the processor itself. When he says its 200mhz slower per core, the x2 4800 processor runs at 2.4ghz, and the x2 4400 runs at 2.2ghz. Both are extremely fast processors, and you will notice the difference, so i dont know what that guy was talking about.

The x1900xt can run HDR, and AA at the same time. The Geforce 7*** series cannot.

- the x1900XT is ATI's top of hte line card. HDR stands for High Dynamic Range, and it is just like high definition lighting. Basically its just more realistic. AA stands for Anti Alias(ing), which just smoothes object edges out. heres a great article about it HERE .
