We need a madness to the method!

Why is there still a method to bypass the filter lying around? It cannot be difficult to write a method to remove Unicode Character 0xAD from post submissions or reject posts with the said character. The moderators don't have a reason to bypass the filter (Hell, RN54 banned himself over it).

It's only a problem causer. Get rid of it.

pr0nz. I bypassed the filter.

Point is, there is always going to be a way around it. Is it worth the fight?

Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

There's far too many variables when someone bypasses the profanity filter - it would be imposible to stop all of it.

The only thing I could see being easy is the censorship of words which are also in Upper case. Other than that, I think it would be too difficult.

I'm a college dropout.

It's not really a problem for the most part, but it does depend on the case. I think Achronos once acknowledged the fact that there are a lot of censored words that really have no reason to be censored; the filter was imported from something that already had the presets and he was too lazy to change it. Don't quote me on any of this though.

It really seems like it's a rule that enforced half of the time because of the fact that there are many things that shouldn't be censored. However, if you have that inconistancy it can cause confusion. So technically it really should either be fully enforced or not enforced at all. The filter really needs to be updated is what needs to happen. So for now if you bypass the filter, just expect that you will get warned/banned, even though it might not happen.

Meh.

Actually, I think there are only a few 'invisible characters.' There's a soft hyphen (Unicode 0xAD) and zero width space (Unicode 0x200B).

Achronos should be able to pick out those two characters and reject them from posts.

I lol'd at the absurd miscommunication that occurs whenever dibbs post something. Perhaps his brain is so highly evolved that he can no longer clearly communicate with lesser life forms, even among his own species.

For some reason I've come to think of the one word topics as criticisms against whatever the topic is; certainly not calls for an increase in severity or breadth of it.

Anyway, I don't think I'll ever be a fan of more censorship; I don't think it ever achieves the goals for which it is employed. The latest justification I've seen for it is that it makes the site "more professional", but it really doesn't. By censoring a word, you have done nothing to actually change the behaviors of the specific user(s) who are using the word which was deemed "unprofessional" (or undesirable or whatever). The user(s) is still "unprofessional", "undesirable", whatever; only now his vocabulary has been slightly diminished. He will just use another word to continue his behavior, while those that would actually have legitimate use for the word are punished.

By no means is this site guilty of censorship of ideas or opinions (baseless tactics of tyrants), but censorship of words, when examined, is still unjust and ineffective.

While this is true, there's more ways to bypass the filter: hyphens, periods, brackets, parenthasis, numbers, or 1337 51734l<. Which makes it impossible since there's so many variations to try and censor.

There have been various additions to stop people from bypassing the filter and blankposting through certain means, but it's likely easier for the webteam to get users banned than limit posting attributes.
