Looking for clan that isn't too serious? Then join the ODST 501st Airborne Battalion. Go to http://www.501st.forumclan.com for more info.

I have made many private groups in my time as a Bungie.net member, and each one has failed. They have either completely failed to get any members at all, or they get no more than 5 members and the group becomes idle. Is this my fault? Or the fault of the members who join?

Half Man.
Half Horse.
Half Machine.
All "Jerk Who's Really Bad at Math."

PS
No, I do not want to join your clan/group.

What's the purpose of the group? Is it interesting? Are you engaging your members in conversation or otherwise presenting them with new things on a regular basis to make them want to stay?

If you're making a group "just because," then yeah, it's probably going to fail unless you can keep people entertained. Make the group focus on something enjoyable and be active in it.

I've tried multiple times, but most of those groups don't get any members, no matter how much I advertise. My current group (which has 4 members including me) is completely idle. I attempted to make it interesting and even gave them higher security roles, but is stayed idle.

Tom T made an awesome group guide. Might be helpful.

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

I have made many private groups in my time

That explains part of it right there. There are tons of groups. So many that, unless there's a good reason for someone to join your group, they might as well join one of a dozen others that discuss the same things. It also doesn't even make sense to join a group with no members, since as you already know that group probably won't survive.

Most successful groups I know of started around some cluster of people who just needed a place to gather. Starting a group just because you want to be a group leader is probably not ever going to work.

Finally, groups just aren't that popular with the mainstream bnetters these days. People who want to be in groups are already in groups.

Because there are only so many purposes groups can fulfill that aren't already done by other groups or other sites completely.

Finding the love of my life, and moving house really screwed up my gaming orientated lifestyle.

Try and make a group that has a real purpose. People normally already have an idea of what they want from a group that they want to associate themselves with, catering to certain people (Machinima junkies, RPers, Forgers, etc) is the best way to ensure a long lasting group. For instance, the group I'm currently with (a machinima orientated group) has been going strong for nearly two years, we're not large (only 18 members) but we're all active, and we have "drive".

Yo Halo53, I'm real happy for you and I'ma let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best bungie.net profiles of all time. OF ALL TIME!

Back in the Post-Halo 2/Pre-Halo 3 era, I realized a lot of groups were founded on the "I want MY group to succeed!" principle. I promptly closed down the 3 groups I had founded, and decided to adopt a couple others as my own in order to become a part of the solution and not the problem. While the "I want to be a member of an awesome group, but I also want to be the founder of said group!" syndrome is definitely a big reason why it's hard to find active members, let alone any members, I think the rest can be attributed to the focus of this site shifting to the public forums. There was once a time where people would venture to the 7th column homepage and find cool groups via the often updated spotlight. Not in 2011.

Its just finding a common interest among your members and keeping the activity up on whatever that is.

My group Dead Mans Hand used to be pretty damn active, though the activity has always fluctuated. We have moved from an old group to this newer one due to everyone thinking the name was better than The HALO DMH Clan

Right now, our activity is down, but it always comes back once we all have something to enjoy with eachother.

I have a Twitter

Its not getting enough coverage, honestly try nice personalised messages to members you KNOW, then it might work.

You are trying too hard. If you want an active group... Join one instead. Things like 'oh this group will play together and be great and you can get cool titles?' that is not unique. Join an established one with an already blooming community. And dont have groups juat to have your name as the leader. I run one very successful private group. But is my name the creator? No. Did I join to run it? No. But the group was unique and developed a great community on its own. So if you want friends or people to play with? Do not go for the 'glory.' Go for the people... And the chance to be a part of something great.

We were somewhere around Barstow...

Every time I received one of those PMs about joining a group I assumed (in my naivety) that it was some sort of phishing attempt. Just saying, maybe random PMs aren't the way to go.
Starting a thread or using actual friends to begin with sounds like the best ideas.

A group should come of THIS thread!

GGGGGGggggggggggggGGGG

The group should be unique. What has your group got to offer that others haven't?

I honestly have no idea what the common interest among us is, but I love the group. Also, the Top 10s are pretty ballin'.

As many have stated though, the group needs to have a common link. Blueprint is a group similar to Atlas where you can submit your map for CC. If it isn't quite up to standards, then everyone is really willing to help point out improvements. The common thread amongst members is real key to a successful group. Knowing where to find members is pretty important too.

To get members, your group has to be original, interesting, and the like. Do your groups have those characteristics?

  • 09.08.2011 1:50 PM PDT

Because most members don't want to join newly formed groups that (most likely) won't make it anywhere.

Edit: Kudos to Tom T for making that group guide. It not only seems very informative, but actually helpful for members seeking to create a new, successful group.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

Its just the times. Back in the day you could get 1000 members fast.
