Subject: Off-site Jobs?

Thus I refute thee

Why does Bungie defend the opposite so violently? It's pretty obvious that if you're focused on writing the most beautiful peace of code a man could think of and then someone yells from across the room "Hey guys, check this out!" or the guy next to you asks you if you have a red pen, that focus and everything you had planned in your head is gone, and the refocusing process will mean wasted time.
Actually, the problem of wasted time in software development is an extremely interesting one, and it's one Bungie, as they developed from the bedroom-and-garage studio that put out Halo 1 to the highly professional house it is today, got a very good handle on. The two publications Wrangling Engineers the Bungie Way and Building Your Airplane While Flying: Production at Bungie detail quite well how, by keeping your whole staff flexible at the small scale, but keeping to a strict process of iteration for the big picture, you can both reap the benefits of an extremely creative, open office without falling into the pitfalls that so damaged H2.

I suspect the problems found with open plan office working are not a consequence of the layout, but rather a consequence of unprofessional staff and a lack of a production framework. Engineers the world over will tell you production staff are the devil's work, but applied properly, they really do work.

So what about when someone farts and you can hear that from across the other side of the building, I believe that was a quote made in one of Bungies video :)

Some of our pods are more removed from the core of the team than others, but we all work in the same giant space.

Like ribosomes. UUUCUA - AAAGAU. MMM - TRNA.

SK15's lifelong dream is to become a Bungie employee?

WHO COULD HAVE GUESSED? I'M SO SURPRISED

"I have no words that would do justice to the atrocities you commit to the English language, as well as your continued assaults on the concepts of basic literacy and logical reasoning."

Pretty much.

Enforcing professional discipline by isolating staff is kind of like the concept of "security by obscurity." It doesn't fix the real problem (your people or production process) and just instead hides the symptom (work disruption caused by morons bothering people for pens instead of going to the supply closet like an adult).

You mean to say you're allowed into the supply closet without a counter-signed acquisition form and business case? Sounds like heaven to me.

As long as you're current on your TPS reports.

Hello! I'm Bunie.net's resident medical student (hell i'm sure there are more but I'm the only one who openly declares it!) I love my emblem, and I am periodically active.
I have a Twitter

Urk is the community guy, so he checks a lot of websites other then Bungie to keep up with how the gaming community is reacting to what they do.
