I heard that bungie locks threads for use of the word "noob". I don't understand how people could think that this word is offensive. Does anyone know the definition of the word?

Noob, Newbies. Noob, Noo-bees. 1: Act of being new, pertaining to newness, participating in activity in wich is new to participant.

I don't think calling someone a noob is any worse than other insults that are used frequently.

PS: I wasn't sure if this was the right place to post this, since it's kinda about forums I posted it in The Septigon. Wait a minute, I change my mind, I wanna post it in The Flood. Someone move it.

Maybe the flood forum would be better, but...
I think the idea of a 'n00b' is stupid. We were all once 'n00bs' so why call other people that for being new to a game/forum...
Also, when people say your using the 'n00b' combo, say the plasma pistol and rifle, I don't call it n00bish, I call it smart. It works effectivley, perhaps the person who views that as a n00b combo is the REAL newcomer.

The problem with the word noob, is that it is used in the wrong and usually offensive way.

The reason people call it the noob combo is because you don't have to be an expierianced player to use it.

Even if only one person here finds it offensive, it's technically against the rules to use such words. Looking at your poll i guess we could say that this post is technically against rules (though of course this "rule" is not as strongly enforced as other).

Personally, I don't find the words offensive nor what it implies, only it's use in a derogatory manner.

The reason people call it the noob combo is because you don't have to be an expierianced player to use it.

Sorry to go off-topic a little here, but i really would beg to differ with that statement.

I think the thread is not being locked cause I'm not calling anyone a n**b, I just want to know what's the big deal about the word noob.

Precisely, enforcing my point of not using it in a derogatory manner (though i can't say if this is the official stance of the moderators and site admin).

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

Not offensive, just stupid and hypocritical. Everyone was new to a game at some point, and most people had someone to teach them how to get better online, even if it was inadvertant.

If people use it, it should be a joke and not an insult. The best example is Star Craft... try to play a normal game type on that after a 2 year hiatus and you just can't get good anymore because people refuse to help you, thus keeping you at "newb" status... whereas two years ago when I was somewhat decent at the game, if I came across a newb, I'd call him a "silly newb" and then proceed to give him tips on how to be faster and better at the game...

For some reason people have the tendancy to act as 1337 Bastards and prevent you from having any fun...

The word by itself isn't too bad. I can go somewhere and say "Yo I'm a noob, can someone help me out?"

If it was used that way all the time, it would be great. But most of the time, it's used to insult. I think anyone can see that. Just calling someone the name at all implies the person is inept, or beneath station, and the only people that are better than anyone else around here are the moderators (joke) and the staff of Bungie (half joke).

Seriously, elitism sucks all around.

The use of the word is generally trashy, and unless you're using it as a joke, can be touted extremely offensive.
Hell, even using it as a joke can be offensive.

As far as the word, feel free to use it elsewhere, you can be as trashy as you'd like. But here we try to keep some semblance of respect for all users of the site.

Although, I've stopped trying to enforce the rule when people say "noob combo". It's damn near impossible.

See?
Quotation marks are magic punctuation that make offensive or derogatory words okay to use.

Seriously though, at a LAN party I went to once the use of the word noob ultimately resulted in one of the most massive and impressive snuggies I have ever been witness to. So... watch how you use it as well as with whom.

I'm afraid to ask what a snuggie is...

-S

Half the problem is that people use the word with offense intended.

The other half is that some people find the word to be the greatest imaginable offense. Any kind of affront to their prowess is highest treachery and such dagger-sharp words must be met with similar steel on a non-existant field of superficial honor.

It's absolutely idiotic to use the word "noob" or any variant of "newbie" to be demeaning to others. Even more so to take it that way. However, people do. And as such, the word isn't allowed. People that do use the word will either need to change their vocabulary, or face a possible week blacklisting from the website.

"Whatever exists, whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent. These anonymous creatures may seem little or nothing in the world. Yet the smallest crumb can devour us. Any smallest thing beneath yon rock out of men's knowing. Only nature can enslave man and only when the existence of each last entity is routed out and made to stand naked before him will he be properly suzerain of the earth."

Personally, I can't stand the word. If I ever use it, it's to illustrate a point, or to ask a question regarding it. I've probably used the word four or five times for as long as I have been here. My problem with the word is simply that it is a sign of laziness and lack of consideration for others. The very word is meant to mean a person who is new to a certain concept, such as talking over the internet or playing the game. Since people were to lazy to say "I am new to this forum, and don't know my way around," people decided to create a new term to save them time. I view the term the same way as typing incomplete words. There is no consideration for others. Rather than using time to even make sure people can read the word, they would prefer saving themselves as much time as possible by continuing on, and in some cases, not even looking at what they are writing.

I don't find it offensive. Just annoying.

Its all about context..I'm crap at TS or anything else in MM and I have often been called a n00b, but I play games for the fun of it not as a competitive sport so I don't really care.

Personally, i'd liek to see some formal acknowledgement of homophobia as an offence, i'm actually quite disgusted at how rampant it is in the community.

Well..... I will admit that it is a very rare occurrence and is one of the more juvenile retaliations in existence. Its rarity stems from the strength required to pull it off.

The snuggie is an exceptionally severe form of the wedgie. Though I am not sure who was the first to create it I do know from what I have seen that the victims typically experience severe pain as the cottony waistband is pulled over their head. Typically a tearing sound is associated with this maneuver as the elasticity is stretched far beyond its maximum allowable bounds. This action is typically reserved for the most extreme of retaliations...

If only that's what people actually meant when they used the term. When people use it they way the do in games, Xbox Live, forums, etc, it means something totally different. Something that many consider offensive. Unfortunately, that is the way that the term is predominantly used on Bungie.net, so that's why the rule's in place.

Oh yes, they are very real... though they typically are only possible when the undergarment has been subjected to enough force to tear. The term "atomic wedgie" is far less specific and is subject to a variety of interpretations.

Melvins huh? So... guess this Melvin guy was kinda down on his luck.

Snuggies are very rare and you should count yourself lucky should you ever get to witness one.
-And that leads to my moral of the day.
:Don't ever call the other children noobs because you may just get snuggied/Melvined to the maximum possible degree of snuggization/Melvinization.

The problem with noob is that some players call everyone they beat or are losing to a noob. It has lost all meaning. There aren't nearly as many new players with no skills as there were when the game launched. If you are going to be a jerk, use a more original insult.
