Subject: First Chapter of Glasslands in OXM.

Plekpedia - The most epic site in the history of ever.

With something such as this, I figure that this is probably super duper old and I'll look stupid here, but the annual Halo edition of Official Xbox Magazine is out, and it has the first chapter of Glasslands in it. I liked it a lot.

Anyone else read it? Once again, sorry if old. :/

The writing is terrible.

Almost every character is somewhat annoying and Halsey is severely mischaracterized, id est she acts -blam!-y and mopey and complains constantly about being out of shaped.

You then have a new Spartan appearing out of nowhere and the usual religious preachy bull-blam!- from a sect of Elite fanatics.

Glasslands might be what I feared: a sh1tty-story.

I'll wait for it's release online

BTW Does Thel Vadam appears in that chapter as halopedian claims?

What issue is it? October? And what Page?

I am a huge fan of Traviss' writing, so I personally cannot wait for Glasslands. I think she has a lot to offer the Halo universe.

Nothing wrong with showing some religious/political diversity within the sangheili race, seeing as they're confused now about what to believe in.

Religious fanatics are all the same, no matter what sect/denomination/Religion they come from. I had hoped to see something a bit different for a change, but my fears were true. We suffered 6 games and 6 novels of Religious fanaticism, and now it is in the post Halo 3 trilogy as well.

Opportunity wasted.

I'm all for opinions, but this guy's -blam!- ing is so extreme I'm pretty sure he's trolling.

^^and anton, how does it come as a surprise to you at all that the Elites wouldn't just straight up move on? Thats poor storytelling, its lazy, without devoloping the culture to explain what went on to get them to move on. (which is part of the point of the book, exploring their culture post-schism).

Expecting something different is...ignorant, really. Its really not how people work, and I understand that the Elites aren't people per say, but as characters, they've been treated as such for almost the whole franchise now.

I agree, I think he's pretty quick to judge the whole book from one chapter.

Maybe he only likes battles, like ship-to-ship space battles or between infantry on the ground, instead of plot and character development.

Exactly, people need to realize the "event" stories, like Fall of Reach, are pretty much done, from here on out its about people. To be perfectly honest, I haven't seen a good reason as to why Glasslands or the Forerunner trilogy sucks yet; all of them are:

1) Boring (less action)

2) Poorly written (in Karen's case, she writes heavy details and goes deep into the psche of the characters; this is not poor writing, its a style of writing)

3) Breaches canon (???)

4) Certain oppurtunities were "wasted" (again, ???)

Anyway, regarding OXM, has it been shipped to subscribers yet?

^^Yes, I would believe thats obvious.

I do not expect to see either their whole society move on instantly nor show solidarity in their beliefs and motivations. I understand that. My issue is, and always has been, the way in which we always see the same type of Elites all the way through the franchise. During the Human-Covenant war it was excusable due to the circumstances, but after Halo 3 it is not. Why do we need to see the point of view of even more misanthropist religious totalitarians? Why not show us the point of view of some burgeoning thought revolutionaries instead? It is always the same crap that they show and I am tired of it.

I believe its issue 127, october 2011. However, I don't have the magazine itself so I've no idea about the page number.
I don't think so, but it wouldn't make sense for the November article to be out.

This is the US OXM?

  • 09.10.2011 8:00 AM PDT

Plekpedia - The most epic site in the history of ever.

Alrighty, sorry it took me so long to get back here.

The issue is... I don't rightfully know. I have a subscription to OXM (and yes, OXM US), but I did NOT get this in the mail. It was only in stores. It is not to be confused with the recent issue that had a lot of Halo in it, this is ALL Halo. The cover is a split pic of Master Chief's MKV helmet, with the left side being 01 graphics, and the right side being 2011 graphics.

The page, if anyone still really needs to know is 72.

My opinion (if anyone cares lol):

I didn't think it was terrible at all, actually! I personally really enjoyed it. I think the new characters are interesting, and it is almost (as stupid as this sounds) like moving into a new universe. The post-war Halo universe already has a really different feel- and I like it. The conversation between Osman and 'Telcam was cool. For anyone else who read it- so Osman IS a Spartan? Or no? I didn't quite get it because I am slow today, ha ha.

I think that 'Telcam ('Telcam by the way, used to be a ship master) had a realistic (well... as realistic as Halo can be lol) view on everything that was going on. For those complaining about heavy religious crap or whatever- did you not see it mentioned that he was 'fundamentalist' and had a 'Very, VERY old tradition of faith?'. It isn't like every Elite is gonna be like that.

Like I was saying though, the post war view was very cool. I liked how many humans weren't quite sure the war was over yet either.

Thel is NOT in this chapter, but he is mentioned . There was also a reference to Noble Team which was cool I thought.

The look inside the Dyson Sphere was interesting, and I didn't find anyone to be out of character. But their attitudes were a bit different because of their current situation, and the little tension between Mendez and Halsey.

Overall, I really can't wait for the book. But that is just me. Sorry for typos. :P
