How is it going with Blue Team?

Did they revived Katana out of these pods?

Sry for the interview like questions :p

There was only a tad bit about those in the Dyson Sphere. They're really just scouting and hunting for food.

And I don't think I saw anything on Katana, strangely enough. Unless my memory sucks a lot.

... and the usual religious preachy bull-blam!- from a sect of Elite fanatics.

What exactly are they like and what do they say?

Nothing wrong with showing some religious/political diversity within the sangheili race, seeing as they're confused now about what to believe in.

Religious fanatics are all the same, no matter what sect/denomination/Religion they come from. I had hoped to see something a bit different for a change, but my fears were true. We suffered 6 games and 6 novels of Religious fanaticism, and now it is in the post Halo 3 trilogy as well.

Opportunity wasted.

It seems your right. . .

I was really giving karen the benefit of the doubt, but i guess now were just going to have an elite driven story. I'm really tired of the elites always getting special attention, just because bungie liked them the most (they were the first species they designed, so they had some sort of attachment to them) and now it seem 343 will follow in bungie's footsteps.

I hope i am wrong, and later in the novel, they get what's coming to them. Some sort of punishment is long overdue for the elites, just as the forerunner were punished for their actions against humanity and the san-shyuum with the timeless one and the flood etc.

WTF?A single chapter shows Elites and later the dyson sphere and you jump into conclusion that the book is all about the Sangheili?
Do me a favor, listen to a podcast and you know that both Humans and Sangheili are important in this book,it isn't surprising that Elites would get one of the main spots in this book if they were one of the main reasons of the civil war and allied themselfs with the UNSC.

What you guys also like to do is thinking you know everything about an unreleased book based on a bit little info from a podcast where most spoilers are avoided.

You may have misunderstood me. I would actually like to see a Sangheili centered novel, so long as it is not restricted to the dull point of view of their version of Westboro Baptist Church, like what Glasslands seems to be doing.

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

You know guys, it's only the first chapter of a much larger book. You can't really write it off yet. Otherwise, we just become the people who wrote off Legends because ti was Anime.

I am a huge fan of Traviss' writing, so I personally cannot wait for Glasslands. I think she has a lot to offer the Halo universe.

I'm not familiar with her writing, but know she is a renowned writer. After having read Human Weakness in Evolutions, I agree she can offer a lot to the Universe.

I cant wait for Grasslands, either.

Kinda early to judge the whole book from something you haven't even read yet doncha think? And what? Did you honestly expect to never see any sort of religious fervor or anything of the sort from the Elites again? In order for their species to evolve as characters at all there has to be some sort of conflict and something for the new thoughts and beliefs to contrast and perhaps conflict with. To just simply have them all just instantly become atheistic, agnostic, or change religions instantly wouldn't be very satisfying for the story, if there's any changing that's going to be done then it has to be believable. And an instant change in beliefs is generally not believable in the least.

Exactly, what I was trying to tell him, but you put it in better words then I could. The Glasslands trilogy will probably delve into that cultural devolopment, but they've gotta start somewhere.

I've got a tale that's never been told. Stick to script and handle your soul. I've got a tale that's never been, never been, never been, never been told.

I don't want to sound pretentious, but try writing a novel based off of all the Halo universe has to offer, only show one chapter of the entire work in OXM, and try to make everyone happy.

I work on things that look like they deserved to be -blam!- on, and they're barely more than a chapter. Cut her some slack, and wait to judge the entirety when it's released in October.

  • 09.10.2011 8:42 PM PDT

I don't think you guys are getting what anton is saying. Of course he doesn't think that instantly after the games, all the elites would readily abandon their faith. He's saying that seeing elites from this point of view for ten years is stale and one-dimensional. It's boring, and like the elite's religious fervor, it should be grown out of. The events of Halo 2 and Halo 3 are the beginning of the "transition" that someone else posted about. Now isn't the time to go back and heavily feature fundamentalist elites, it IS the time to show revolutionary thinkers. The sangheili need an Enlightenment, not a Great Awakening.

That said, this is only the first chapter, and to assume that a major focus of the novel is a heavily religious elite would be jumping ahead of ourselves a little. I entirely agree with anton though (as I usually do, it turns out), fundamentalism is getting stale.

no no, i understood what you meant. I was just putting in my own 2 cents. I'm just being a bit sour with the elites. The only time I ever liked them was when they were the enemy, in ce and reach.

But as everyone else is saying, I'm going to try to hold on until the novel is actually released. Hopefully ONI will be a big help to humanity as travis was putting it, as in, splintering the elite's, exploiting their post-covenant weaknesses (their long dependence on the san-shyuum for science and engineering, maintenance for ships etc.), making sure that they never become a threat to humanity again.

That would be an interesting read. And hopefully having humanity acquainted with forerunner technology, (which if i remember correctly, it should not take long for humanity to learn how to use some forerunner tech like in the case of the san-shyuum or sangheili, as we all remember anders from Halo wars easily activating those forerunner warships). After all, the new trilogy will be called the "reclaimer Trilogy"

Any specifics on what happened regarding the Elites in the first chapter? I understand you mentioned religious fanaticism, but what type of religion could it possibly be? The Covenant is broken, and judging from The Return, their society as a whole is struggling. They have no scientists, no law, no clergy. What type of fanaticism can Glasslands possibly display in the first chapter regarding the Sangheili?

Indeed. I feel as if we just went back to The Cole Protocol era with this. It feels as if it has went back the way instead of forward. I mean why the hell should we care what happens to any of these characters? I don't see people caring about WBC so why these guys?

I think I see how this is all going to end. The reason why ONI is attacking the Sangheili. I don't think there will be any changes within the Sangheili, I don't foresee any alliance, I don't see anything like that happening. I see it as Humanity mopping up the last bastions of Covenant civilization, Sangheili included.

Exhibit A:

In this first of a trilogy, bestselling author Karen Traviss takes readers and gamers through the chaos of the post-Halo 3 universe. With the Human-Covenant war over, the universe is in chaos. The enemy that gave humanity much-needed drive and unity has been defeated. Rising from the trauma of this long-fought, devastating conflict, the UNSC must now lay claim to the universe. But new dangers, both alien and human, may threaten any chance for lasting peace. Join a group of old soldiers and new heroes as they begin a mission to penetrate what was once the heart of the Covenant empire in a desperate attempt to stop old foes from rising again.
Optimism is overrated.

I am still at a loss of what the elites could possibly be faithful in. Could someone please provide some sort of summary as to what the elites have such religious fervor in 10 years after the fall of the Covenant?

The Forerunners themselves. Contrary to popular belief, the Halo rings igniting the Journey was not an Elite belief, it was a Prophet one. The Elites once believed all Forerunner artifiacts to be beyond mortal comprehension and should therefore be left untouched, kept sacred and pure. This is one of the reasons the Elites and Prophets waged a war.

But when the Prophets won, the Elites decided an alliance was the best route and formed the Covenant with them, using Prophet religion, not Elite, as their faith to seal the pact. When the news broke out the Prophets were lying, the Elites lost faith only in the Prophets as messengers of the Gods, not the gods themselves.

This is why I don't get why people dislike the Elites' continued faith towards the Forerunners. They have no reason to not worship them, for in the beginning they didn't believe in the Path to the Journey anyway, they only believed in the Forerunners' divinity. The Prophets lies, revelation of these lies yet their continued belief is not a matter of them being stubborn. They've simply reverted more to their old faiths, turning on the faith that was more or less forced upon them.

Hm. I knew their old beliefs, but to me that would be like proving Christianity, Judaism, or Islam is wrong so I revert to Norse Mythology. I do not like that concept, but if it is what is in store for Glasslands, the Elites would wage war on humanity, because, as stated here, humanity is doing much tampering and tinkering with forerunner artifacts. So basically Human- Sangheili War?
