Subject: Why Does...

The Subject of long threads change by page number? Is it just the subject of the thread when that page was created? If you don't get what I'm saying, I'll show you. I'll use the uStalk thread as an example.

Page 12. Subject: Moderator Finder: Find out who is online! (Now with more Linux!)
Page 36. Subject: Moderator Finder :: uStalker :: Update - back to normal!

And so on and so forth. Now we know that someone has the ability to mess with this stuff, due to funny things they've done to threads in the past. Take this thread as an example. Now go to the 2nd page.

I've seen this a few times, but I can't find any other threads besides that one. What is this mischief? Who can do it? I DEMAND ANSWERS!

EDIT: I found this one too. Now go to the last page. Sum1z havin a blazt.

It's something to do with how the pages are marked, or something.

I made a thread about this awhile ago.

Bungie.Match.com: Our Johnson knows what the ladies like.

It has something to do with title edits. Previous titles are shown on later threads. I have no freakin' idea why, but it does.

Either way, we don't know. :/

Before x months or years (I have no sense of time) ago the title area was editable when responding to threads. This could be done with individual posts, but would not obviously change the thread title. However, if, when someone clicked reply, they replied to a post with an edited title, it would carry over said new title. If this response were to generate a new page in the thread (aka 25, 50, etc.) it would simply name the top of the page to the name of the edited title.

OH, so it doesn't happen anymore?

Seeing as you can't edit titles anymore, you may or may not (likely the latter) be able to find an edited post and reply to that, but I'm not certain it would still work.

Racism isn't wrong if it's funny.

Why? Because it's the internet. Their attention span is like:

.

It's actually smaller but if the mark was any smaller you wouldn't be able to see it.

That's why the subject changes per page. The internet's attention span is too short.

It was supposed to be a joke but if you don't get it...

I didn't at first, because you said "their" so I thought you were talking about a group of people. :D

I get it now. Harharhar.

If you look at the (mostly) older forums, you'll see that you usually have the ability to edit the original title of a thread and "branch off" into a different discussion. halo.bungie.org is a good example of that I think.

So, you could probably infer that each "post" (don't think of it as just the text, but rather an id, the text itself, which thread it belongs to, etc...) also contains its own subject field, it's just that the web team has disallowed it to be modified. IIRC, you can look up someone's post history and it will tell you the subject of the thread to at the time it was posted. The fact that the subject of the thread can change per page based on when the 25th, 50th, 75th, etc... post is made, I think means that when that post is made, it's simply taking the current title of the thread and putting it into the subject field of the new post.

The title of each thread page is determined by the subject line of the first post on that particular page.

A while back, you used to be able to edit the subject line when replying. Therefore, a user could change the subject of a page if their post was first. This is no longer the case.

Now, the only way the subject of thread pages can be different is if the creator changes the original post subject title. For example, let's say someone creates a thread with the subject line Alpha. Replying to that post will lock the subject line as Alpha. The OP changes the subject to Beta, thus replying to that post after the edit will lock the subject line as Beta. If you reply to someone who replied to the OP when it was Alpha, your reply will also have an Alpha subject line.
