For the record, I agree that Recon technically bypassed the filter and set a bad example. I think it was blown out of proportion, though... Certainly not worthy of a one-week ban.

Self-censoring, however, is entirely different. It's not really bypassing the profanity filter if you are essentially performing the same task as the filter does. What if someone manually typed out "-blam!-"? Or used all asterisks? Is that considered bypassing? What if someone self-censors a word that isn't on the profanity list? It's a bit of a slippery slope... So, where do you draw the line?

Pardon me for saying, but it seems like a bit of a childish way to prove a point.

I guess it's easier to maintain a zero tolerance policy than having to operate on a case-to-case basis where it's all of a sudden just one star in a five letter word.

Still a bit silly though to actually enforce it when it's not going to affect those who arent familiar with the word in the first place (all two of them).

Why would you ask for pardon? You'll struggle to find anyone who wouldn't describe this, any aspect of it, from recon all the way through to bobcast and the multitude of hurf and blurf in between, as supremely childish.

Even if Bobcast was within his rights, that was still a -blam!- thing to do. (Not saying this is true) It almost feels like he had a grudge against this member and was looking for any excuse to ban him, that, or this member had no leniency because he was not known on the Forums (because as we all, hardcore members don't get banned for silly things like this, right?).

I don't really think this was a fair judgement. A week ban for something this stupid? I honestly didn't even know this rule existed until now, because it's not thoroughly explained well. All it says in the rules is "- Do not bypass the profanity filter." Yeah, that may still justify for censoring your own word, but few members would ever figure that out on their own. I think before you start throwing out week bans for something like this, at least make the rule more directive.

What is so bad about a bypass?
Avoiding the filter to post a filtered word, sure. Ban then.
But a bypass is the same ending, just a different route.
A word wasn't posted in all its glory, we just know it began with a 'b'.
Banning for a bypass that does the job of the filter is dumber than being arrested for driving to a destination a different way than your satnav recommended.

Well there's already the -blam!- feature so I don't see why the OP would need to self-censor.

Exactly. The only reason why the OP did use the other way of censoring was so that people could figure out what the word was. This is in fact bypassing the filter.

Well done you for figuring that one out! Now onto the crux of the matter: whether banning people for just avoiding the filter is a MODERATOR'S TRUE CALLING or really -blam!- stupid and whether doing it in such a manner is A NOBLE WAY TO MAKE A POINT or just plain -blam!- childish.

I don't think so. I've even seen ninjas say stuff such as "That is a load of blam", actually typing blam. Are you saying that should be bannable then? I think that rule is rather incredulous.

You are still hinting at a curse word.

For example, I once got banned for typing the word 'shat,' because it is so close to the actual word.

:)
That's completely -blam!-ing ridiculous. Now we are supposed to guess what the blam filter wants to blam but hasn't quite been aptly programmed to do so? In effect, we are supposed to do the blam filter's job for it when it is incapable of doing it for itself? That is just ludicrous.

The rabbit hole of wacky moderation policies goes deeper and deeper the more threads that I read.

Oh, and I'll just remind everyone that Bungie itself/themselves similarly self-censored "the S word" in some of their banner ads that appear on the side for the Bungie Store. Specifically, the line was "fix your -blam!-" with the last word being self-censored with only a single asterisk. So to say the least, between the moderators own posting habits and Bungie's own advertising, we have some serious issues with "tone at the top" and there should be no wonder why some members think that there is leniency and leeway to be had with the blam filter.

Hopefully it's not an indication that they're developing a child-friendly game. Although I guess it could be the Crimson thing.

More likely that's simply because Bungie isn't Halo's site anymore.

No, don't call me a hero. Do you know who the real heroes are? The guys, who wake up every morning, and go into their normal jobs, and get a distress call from the commissioner, and take off their glasses and change into capes and fly around fighting crime. Those are the real heroes.

I have a ton of reasons to swear here but I usually stay out of the mains.

It's a fair point. I mean, yeah swearing isn't a necessity, but it sure helps illustrate the intensity of certain interactions based through text on a screen.
