Bungie's website, Bungie's rules.

Also bypassing the profanity filter on purpose will get you banned.

Hello, I'm Mr AwesomePizza. I like pizza and I'm a man. Reasoning for the name. I like to listen to the classics of music, write poetry, play video games, and much much more. I'm always down for a nice chat, so please hit me up for some conversation.

I agree.
Also it's hard to understand someone when there is a random "-blam!-" in the way. It could also make people think something entirely else from what the OP/poster is actually saying.

I agree, to an extent. In fact, I won't be surprised if you get banned for bypassing the profanity filter in the OP. However, from what I gather, Bungie does not want to assume that all the children that visit the site will be offended.

I often find myself forgetting that this site is made by game devlopers, but we must keep this is mind. While children will play video games that they shouldn't, Bungie can't just assume that they won't get offended by swear words. Also, I believe the profanity filter helps in that some Bungie Employees swear when posting, and if it wasn't filtered, some people (yes, there are people that fragile) may get the wrong idea.

In the end, I don't think it's a huge deal. I don't think you should be punished too harshly for bypassing it, and I certainly don't think you should be banned for self-censoring your own swears.

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

The powers that be would rather not see nasty language on their forums. It's pretty much as simple as that. It's not perfect, but that's how it is.

Bypassing the profanity filter is no big deal, really. But neither is -blam!- appearing in a users post.

There are users in this site which are under age and are offended by words which are filtered, and besides, profanity brings no assistance to people who wish to partake in discussions.

That being said the words which are filtered and are left un 'blam'-ed in a users post is a thing which may need refinement.

And it just causes a lot of trouble.

What a god damned trouble maker that profanity filter is.

We should kick its ass.

Only after we ban Bricypoo.

I actually like the profanity filter. It helps keep thinks clean and more mature. People have a tendency to swear less since it always bleeps them out.

Also, before people say "Wow, you must be a little kid" not liking swear words used constantly or even saying them does not mean you are a little kid. It helps keep you clean for places like work where you are not allowed to use them in most places.

I personally get annoyed when it is used constantly and it gets extremely overused. I don't swear, but that is just me.

I have no problem with removing the filter for swear words, but there is still some words that are pretty offensive to people/races that I think should remain censored.

Swears are childish though, remove them.

Or just ban people who use certain words in a racial/discriminatory way.
Having the option, and banning people for improper use is better than a "we made a word that indicates you've sworn at someone, so they're gonna know you have, and they're gonna work out which word you used through context....but we kinda like the word '-blam!-'....so yeah, feel free to swear because we'll catch it for ya."

Surely discouraging swearing by banning for improper use as opposed to the current system is more responsible.

Per Audacia Ad Astra

I'd would annoy me to see F words everywhere, so I'd prefer a website void of as much profanity as possible. And since when will profanity assist a discussion? Do users not have a good enough vocabulary to find alternatives to profanity?

“Oh, it’s a little bit of everything, it’s the mountains, it’s the fog, it’s the news at six o’clock, it’s the death of my first dog, it’s the angels up above me, it’s the song that they don’t sing, It’s a little bit of everything.”
- Dawes, A little bit of everything

My English teacher made a good point one day that I think is relevant here: "If one has to resort to using swear words in an argument, it's because they lack anything intelligent to add."

On the Internet, I think this is pretty true. There are cases where curse words could be used in an intelligent manner (for example, this thread) but there is a plethora of other circumstances wherein curse words would be abused on Bungie.net.

Now I know I've argued against the whole "if it can be abused don't let it happen in the first place" argument, and I'll stick to it. If someone uses derogatory, insulting, or vulgar language towards another user then they should be punished for it. People should not be punished just for using -blam!- in a post as it could have a valid place in the discussion (for example, Recon's post about a -blam!- star/teacher).

EDIT: After thinking about this, and re-reading my post, I've determined that the filter is a good thing, but that moderators should use discretion when banning users who "bypass" the filter.

EDIT 2: You know what? I have a serious question here. The OP has been reported, as you can tell, but what I want to know is if anyone was genuinely offended by what he wrote? Sure, he bypassed the filter but it was for discussion about the filter itself. Did some people blindly report this as if to say "HURR DURR HE DONE BYPASSEDID THAT THERE FILTER THING" and if that's the case, why?

Well thats a load of bollocks.
The use of a swear word has nothing to do with intelligent argument. That is simply the line of people who think they're gods gift to culture.

It is true. Swearing does not add to any discussion in any progressive way, so what is the point to it? It is like adding zero to both sides of an equation (it is irrelevant).

Swearing in an argument can show depths of emotion that "you're a bad person and I don't like you" simply fails to convey.
Though I doubt there is too much use for that on here.

Swearing doesn't simply exist for those with limited vocabulary to use in tricky situations. It is there for everybody.

Its not inherently bad, I have no idea why people think it is, parental influence aside.

SPARTANS! WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSION?!

AOOH, AOOH, AOOH!

If it can't be said without swearing, then it doesn't deserve to be said.

Additionally, should the filter be removed, people would just abuse it. As it stands, swearing is an inconvenience because it breaks up the post in terms of the methods of avoiding the filter (aside from when people know what they're doing). Bastard and dick make sense to keep uncensored, because bastard has a whole load of other meanings (see 'bastard', on wikipedia) and dick is a nickname for Richard, along with an actual name.

I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

All I ever hear is either "remove the filter!" or "[word] needs to be added to the filter!". How about a middle ground, a customizable user filter. It'd would already have the existing words and could be updated at any time by the web team, but you could personally add/remove words from the list or just even opt out completely. Everyone could be happy, fine tuning things as they please.

I feel a big sight change is on the horizon, who knows what it'll hold. Perhaps some of you will get your wish.

I agree. Now a days you hear profanity everywhere (especially on the internet), and I highly doubt that the users who go on Bungie.net are new to it.
