Subject: Are you sure?

I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

So here I am, 1:30ish in the morning and suddenly an idea pops into my head. I find myself suddenly of the opinion that we need a little pop up on the site that appears when someone creating a new topic, asking them if they're sure they want to post. However, so they actually have to think about it and can't just click through it, the "YES" button would be set to a 30 second timer which should give anyone enough time to second guess themselves.

Perhaps this could cut down on repeat topics, perhaps even giving someone a second chance to avoid a ban, it could even
deter spammers. Heck perhaps this thread was a bad thought that could have been avoided with such a system. Honestly though, I'd even settle for the little paperclip office assistant thing from MS Office.

While I'm not completely serious about this the thought has crossed my mind on a few occasions, how about the rest of you? Anyone else think something like this or similar would be effective, or perhaps you find it would do more harm than good?

If I had to wait 30 seconds to post, I'd go browsing until the timer was up.

Drat... all those months of thinking about it to have it be thwarted so easily.

In all seriousness though, you're not particularly the kind of person it would be in place to stop. I can't see spammers or trolls waiting out 30 seconds for lulz that could be found easier somewhere else. Perhaps I simply underestimate those I wish to discourage. That is also possible.

I do think the site would definitely see a drawback in terms of new members. Which could be good and bad.

If there's one thing I've learned working as an account security admin for a major website it's that every act of security you put in place has it's up and downs. This typically results in either increasing or decreasing user experience. The balance just to be so that there are a larger number of users being affected positively than negatively.

The timer wouldn't even have to be 30 seconds, tweaking it to find a more suitable balance would always be something that could be done.

This is an internet forum. I don't think anyone subpar enough to dedicate their life to its degradation has the competence to think 'oh, maybe this isn't what I should be doing,' no matter the time they're allowed to think about it.

I think it's an exaggeration to use such a system to prevent *bad* threads.

There was a thread once about that very idea, whether or not someone had ever not posted something they had typed up. I was pleasantly surprised by the number of people who actually do second guess what they had planned to say. Heck even I take a moment to reread something before I post it.

Even then it wasn't meant to be an end-all solution, that'd quite frankly be silly for me to claim. Hell, you can just consider this a thought exercise.

In that regard, isn't the title system just an "exaggeration" to use such a system to encourage *good* behavior? In a perfect world with a perfect internet nothing would be need to be in place to either encourage or discourage certain behaviors.

I don't think a timer would do anything but stop new members from participating as much and delaying trolls by 30 seconds. If a troll really wants to post, they'll just browse like Duardo said until they can make their post. New members could easily just go "screw this, it's taking too long".

Good point but the title system isn't an exaggeration because it's merely a title and it's up to the person whether to pursue a better title or not, and yeah it encourages good behaviour.

There's no "perfect internet" as long as the Internet is free anyone can say anything on it; from good and intelligent posts to stupid things, and some things better left unsaid.

If they're going to post something 'ban-worthy' then let them be banned.
