I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.
I tweet?
I'll just pick out the two true key points to the OP. First, as we all know and have heard before, this is the internet. As such we should all expect asshattery. Should we accept it? No, but that's why we have rules in place to keep it from getting to far out of hand. These forums are a social ground, much like real life you will have your friends then you'll have everyone else. Unfortunately when you move to a new place (these forums), it's usually just you... and everyone else. Eventually you find your way, make friends or whatever. But you will always have the people who look down their nose at you. It's part of life and society.
As for the title being something "to work for", not really. I got my title being well... my self. I didn't work for anything, the worst I've done was reply to spam and aid in the derailing of a topic. Though I suppose the latter could be seen as being an asshat.
My point is that people should see titles as something to work for. They mean nothing, have no value, and are more or less silly hats. In fact the titles are part of the problem because people put their own values into the titles. One of them being what's already been joked at here and that's elitism. And again as you said that's a problem with the people, the titles only help harbor it. Losing the titles would give one less thing for those people to cling to.
And just as well I wouldn't mind tossing out join dates either.
