And the gears will spin.
And the sinners sin, but at least we'll give them hell.
And the righteous few will spit on you.
So bid them all farewell.

I have a hard time feeling sympathy for people who don't have the courage to take charge of their own lives.
Ideal reaction to new member: "Welcome! I like seeing my community grow."
New member's ideal approach to community: "I want to help this community grow."
Ok, so it is illogical to dislike a new member for being new. Subsequently, it is illogical for a new member to pay any mind to any existing member guilty of the previous.
BUT new members can do annoying things. When I see an obviously new member do something silly, I approach it as if they simply don't know better. Maybe I should put this in italics to drive the point home.
Ideal reaction to new member silliness: "He does not know better."
Then, you show him--with a little bit of cooth--how to improve next time. The next case involves the exact some offense with a different mindset. See example...
New member posting a topic about BR spread vs. older member posting a topic about BR spread
We can all acknowledge that the thread will most likely accomplish nothing more than a lock. The difference is that the new member just doesn't know better. With a bit of guidance, this member can become a useful addition to the community. The older member (ideally) does know better. It's unfair to assume either member is a moron, but it is sometimes so. In this case, the sensible response to move on. Again, italics for the kiddies.
Ideal reaction to legitimately stupid members: "Move. On. Do not post or PM or tell your mom. Do not be 'the one exception.' Do not convince yourself that this person needs policing. We all win if the thread drifts into lonely cyberspace."
My basic thoughts.
