Ken, you'd be mythic by now but you went down a bad path. Shame on you.

Someday, I would love to hear this story. I have a feeling it could easily become a best-selling novel.

Stop encouraging this nonsense.

OT: We shouldn't get rid of titles all together. We should just change them all to one general title.

Any suggestions?

I was a finalist :P

I think it should be the date and time the thread was created. No bias in that.

"That's about all that can be said for plots, which anyway are just one thing after another, a what and a what and a what.

Now try how and why."

I wouldn't care if titles were done away with, but I have my doubts that doing away with them with somehow make discussions any more mature or intelligent.

It's inherent to the human condition that people, being of limited perception, will tend find some singular element to judge the entirety of a post on. This has far more to do with a general lack of maturity among a good number of users rather than some failing of the system.

Id est, do away with them, but don't expect it to make things better.

You know what else draws undue and unfair attention to anything in particular?

Quote boxes.

They should be abolished, for they might be abused by someone seeking undue attention, and we really don't want that.

This is actually not a quote. Quote boxes just make it look like I am responding to something previously stated and make my post appear more relevant to the discussion and therefore more people are likely to read and respond to it.

Interesting thought.

I play for fun and armory completion. :)

I disagree with the discussion title thing. Discussion titles are there so you can choose what threads you read. Maybe it work in the Community forum, but not in the Flood or the Reach forum.

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

Halo: Reach Forum on Titles: Who cares?
The Flood on Titles: Lol. Just use Coup.
Bungie Community on Titles: EVERYONE STOP JUDGING OTHERS. (Even though nobody actually does it)

CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME WHAT COUP IS!!!

What I am discussing is a users' habit to respond to a post based solely on title.
You don't know me or my posting habits! If I find a post funny or insightful I will respond. Title has nothing to do with it.

Now who the user is and his reputation on B.net might come into play, but not the color of his hat.

Has anything really changed discussion or bias wise since titles were even implemented? Same old same old to me.

  • 09.13.2011 5:39 PM PDT

ISU Cyclones!

Yeah there is a bit of bias that comes when someone with a harder to earn title makes a post. But IMO they get the benefit of that positive bias because they have earned it.

Not enough people try to abuse the system for a better title to outweigh that benefit. Besides. If a jerk manipulates himself into a title then he'll lose it anyway.

Another legendary thread by Duck. I completely agree. Captivating titles are too flashly and often push away threads created by other users with decidedly less interesting titles. This system is a major destructive force.

Then we'd also have to take away usernames if we want to get rid of posting prejudice, as well as making join date invisible. That'd go further to remove any bias there may be than a title removal.
I will tread the path of carnage to preserve the sanctity of discussion.

Then this will just turn into an anonymous discussion board. If that's what you'd like, fight for that.

Ethics are relative and you can't argue my morals are wrong because some dumb class that tried to teach you how to think disagrees. Ethics101 clearly didn't cover point of view.

Well what did you expect? This forum's community has degraded completely in the last year.
That's what they say every year.

It's an inherent fact that the admins fail to recognize as a leech on the quality, content, and overall well-being of the forums. It doesn't take a rocket scientists, let alone a programmer, to discover that titles were a bad idea. Yet they continue to exist? You recognise that there are positives and negatives to practically every design? You're completely ignoring the positives, in order to insinuate the admins aren't smart enough to recognise the flaws in their design.

A good designer (in any field) understands that their decisions won't be popular with every person, and that every choice made has undesirable consequences along with the benefits. And smart designers not only recognises this, but are sensible enough to weigh up the pros and cons, and decide whether their decision leads to a net improvement of their system.

In this case, the titles add value to accounts and discourage users from receiving infractions against their account. So they decided to put it in, believing those benefits to be worth the cost of potential elitism.

I think it's fine to discuss the pros and cons of forum titles. However, I get the impression you believe there are no benefits, and anyone who considers keeping the titles must be too dense to grasp your flawless point of view, and if only they saw the light, they'd change their mind in a heartbeat. But that's because you're not even attempting to be objective.

tl;dr version. Before accusing someone of "failing" to understand your reasoning, make sure you successfully understand their reasoning first. That way you can actually have a back and forth to discuss whether the benefits are worth the drawbacks.

Edit: Ok so I re-re-read the OP much more literally, and touche to you good sir. However, I suspect the fine chap I quoted also missed the satire, so I'm good.
