I know the energy sheilds/gauntlets held by Covenant Jackals would be canon, but why do the colours (and shape) keep changing?

In Halo CE the minor Jackals carry blue sheilds. In Halo 2 and PC they are green. Then in Halo 3 they are blue again although a slightly different blue. In Halo Reach they are blue, but a different shape (which makes the sheilds more proctective). In CEA they are green in classic mode and blue in whatever-the-other-mode-is-called. The major Jackals sheilds also change between orange, red and purple.

Is there a reason behind these changes in the actual canon? Or are they always meant to be the same colour and shape canon-wise?

As for the shape I don't know, but I always just assumed that the different colors were different indicators of the strength of the shield and some Jackals started with better shields than others. Although I could be wrong since it is just an assumption...

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

The changes in size and form are just changes made over to time to improve the overall look of the shield, that aspect dosent really mean it's canon. Same as some weapons have changed in some aspects over time their aesthetic form.

The color, on the other hand, does show a difference. I belive that the red shields are normally stronger than the blue ones. Thus, the red ones are only wielded by Jackal Captains/Heroes or whatever you want to call them.

jackals are mercenaries like the brutes, they have no religous relations with the covenant, them being mercanries i would assume there equipment varries with that particular group

Wrong.

Indeed the Jackal are pretty much hired as mercenaries in the Covenant only mainly serve as scouting ships or scouts on the groud, but the Brutes are the most fanatical race in the Covenant. Their adherence to Covenant Religion is absolute, and they are there for no other reason.

They sure were in Contact Harvest, but are all Brutes so dedicated? I mean the Prophets did choose them, so I guess it stands to reason.

Of course there are exceptions to the case, but around 95% of Brutes are fanatics of the Religion and devote themselfs to it absolutely. That's why the Prophets choose them in Covenant Civil war to replace the Elite's. The Elite's still had a substantial amount of power, represented in the High Council. With them out of the way, the Prophets could rule 100% accordingly to how they wanted to, and the Brutes, fanatics as they are, would accept anything without discussion.

Bungie.Match.com: Our Johnson knows what the ladies like.

The jackal shields are certainly canon. However, I think the color differences are there to help the player tell between the ranks.

Things change over time just like the shields, new types would have been made all the time weather it's to make them take more damage or make them lighter to carry who knows?

Honestly, I think it is just for astetic purposes, the changing colors I mean, not two diffferent ones

I don't think the brutes are fanatics and instead just are very loyal to the hierachs and want to be at the top of the chain (especially above the elites)

Average Joe

UCLA - Aerospace Engineering

Gray Team has been dumping bins of different food coloring into the jackal shield assembly line.

I don't think you guys understood my question. In the each game there are two shield colours. One for the 'Minor Jackal' and one for the Major. However, the Minor Jackal's sheilds change colour from blue to green and back again. The Major Jackals change from Red to Orange to Purple or something like that. Also the shape and size of the Reach shield seems better than the later ones.
Why would these changes be made? Are these changes even canon?

No, no. The Bestiarium in Halo 3's Limited/Legendary Edition clearly calls the Brutes ''fanatics'' and that their adoption of the Covenant Religion ''is complete and absolute''.
