Strongest fighters, shields were very powerful, endured intense military training, could hold off thousands of invaders alone.

Rev.6-8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

A berserk at the Stair of Grief, having been told that the hosts of the Soulless were so many that their spears would hide the sun, is said to have replied 'Then we shall fight them in the shade.'

"This is nothing. At the Stair of Grief our swords got so dull that we had to fight with our bare hands. And you know how hard it is to strangle the Undead." - Turgeis with Burning Steel

Didact's Reprisal -
Now is the time of our unworlding
One final effort is all that remains
And I am not afraid
We shall fulfill our promise
We fight for the grace of the Mantle
And this time none of you will be left behind

Well the Greek spartans also had to deal with rebellion, though that's because they kinda enslaved the helots.
