breathtaking vistas
You kidding me? There was so much fog, it looked like Silent Hill. Technically, Halo 3's were better because the textures in that game weren't as garbled and lo-res as Reach's.
Seriously, go up to a wall in Halo 3, then Reach and compare yourself.
I have. The nice, misty mountaintops of Winter Contingency, the icy, glaciers of SWORD Base, the beautiful auroras and galactic wonders of Long Night of Solace, the ruined cityscape of Exodus and New Alexandria, the dusty plains and plateaus of Tip of the Spear.
All great vistas. Halo 3 had great vistas, I won't deny that. That said, I, and many others, prefer Reach's. And that is unlikely to change unless 343 does something amazing with Halo 4.
I can't really understand why you'd say Reach's views are superior. All of the levels looked extremely bland. I swear, the graphics in this game are comparable to the Dust Bowl of 1930. I don't consider clouds of smoke and fog to be that amazing.
The only thing Reach had going for it was the polygon count, but the textures, not so good.
