Hard is good.

I like the sound of it.

My favourite Halo experience is to be able to decimate enemy hordes whilst on low health yet without dying too many times. The video shown reminds me too much of call of duty veteran where it's simply a chore to push through. Maybe I'm wrong and the short clip I watched wasn't a good representative of the whole game type.

If this was perhaps catered towards a Heroic difficulty would it appease a larger audience?

I believe that when played on Heroic difficulty the AI health remains largely unchanged in this gametype. However the purpose here is to create something challenging, which myself and others consider important if a game is to be fun. The AI does not differ greatly between difficulty levels; it is only really distinguished by damage and accuracy. I have reduced the damage slightly so not to make combat frustrating, but I consider it important to preserve the AI's accuracy and responsiveness. With these changes I wouldn't even look at it in terms of Legendary or Heroic; Legendary was just the best base available to produce the result I wanted.

I notice you tested the gametype out (looking at your player history) and I am curious how you feel after having given it a go?

I did. The overall feel was that it was a fun gametype. It reminds me of the days where I have a good connection, going up against 6 generals is usually a march into death.

I have some improvements:

- Loadout 1: Name change to Warrior

- Loadout 2: Name change to Air Assault

- Loadout 3: Name change to Berserker and change armour lock to drop shield. The reason I say this is because armour lock is simply a delay of your death if you need to use it whilst playing single player alone in the fray. Enemies will happily wait for you to pop out and demolish you. With a drop shield this is not the case as it buys you time to recharge your shields in safety while the enemy wears down the shield itself.

- Loadout 4: Name change to Juggernaut. I would keep the Hologram on this one as I personally felt as though it drew all of the enemies together.

- Loadout 5: Name change to Spec Ops and equipment change to Active Camo. I didn't like the use of the drop shield as I ran out of sniper rifle ammo rather too quickly. The drop shield luls you into a false sense of security too close to the enemy, leading to poor no scopes and much ammo wasted. If the ability was active camo, it would open up the game to teamplay as the active camo sniper would take on a specific role. After all, firefight is best enjoyed with friends.

I think the idea behind the gametype is spot on, but a few tweaks might push it in an even better direction

Okay, listen, we should get our stories straight, all right? If anyone asks, and no one's gonna ask, don't worry, but if anyone asks, tell them as far as you know, the last time you checked, everyone looked pretty much alive, all right? Not dead.

Thank you for the feedback Storm.

I implemented Armour Lock to give the player an additional weapon in close quarters. I do understand that it is simply a temporary delay on the player's death in most cases, but I think that says more about how people use the ability. Dropshield might be a good replacement for the shotgun class, although I am concerned it might be a little too strong a combination, while also slowing gameplay. The same might also be said for the camo sniper, which would encourage players to sit still and wait for a perfect shot, rather than having to quickly hit their target before falling back into their mobile cover. In both cases it depends on what play style I want to encourage; personally I prefer to encourage movement as much as possible.

I kind of agree with The Storm here.

For the gametype to be fun for everyone there needs to be a fallback like being invisible with a sniper rifle if things aren't going to plan.

Plus, shotguns with drop shields would be pretty cool to go out battling in

qued for download.

It looks like im going to have a fun time with this one! I love 2X Score attack and I do appreciate weapon choice and variety.

This just sounds and looks amazing.

I tinkered with FF options too only to have a crappy all hunters and grenade launchers Generator defence "slow as crap" gametype :/

oh well, its something to look into some more!

Awesome. Try tinkering around with the hearing for increased aggressiveness

You guys in this thread are definitely a rare breed.

I stroll into the FF Limited playlist, die once, and it's game over as the other 3 people have already died over 10+ times together. Reach's FF is pretty challenging when you've only got one life to get it done with.

Played through the game a few times. It's pretty awesome. Sniper Loadout should be changed to have AC.

I played one Co-op match with just one other person and I think the hearing needs to be toned down because it's almost impossible to roam outside of the immediate spawn area.

Nice job.

I downloaded the gametype, does it work well with multiple people?
I know that I initially shot this down, but I feel a need to revise my thoughts.

Yesterday I played the gametype with a second player and we both had a great time. It was the first time I've ever actually had enjoyable Firefight games over XBL, as the netcode was actually tolerable.
-------Edit 1: I think I have had some misconceptions about the connection quality of Firefight. The connection can be bad, but it can be more than tolerable provided you find people with whom you share a good connection. I have been able to find a number of of decent connections, one of which was virtually LAN quality, by preferring good connection in Firefight doubles.-------

I did make a multiplayer version of the gametype for 3-4 players, with some alterations (e.g. shield and health recharge down to 110% each to place greater emphasis on teamwork and reduce the individual capabilities of the players -- link for interested). However I am concerned that a 4 player environment would almost make decent connection a statistical impossibility. I think this is part of the reason why Limited is doomed to a small population and why full lobby Firefight needs ridiculous arcade gametypes to draw numbers.

As per the removal of Firefight Limited, Limited lovers need to take more notice of Firefight Doubles. The population is more substantial, a nice selection of gametypes are on offer, and players are far more likely to find a game with a good connection; it is the best of both worlds.
-------Edit2: multiplayer link is now broken, see here for revised setup. Having tested it I must again profess my misconceptions about the connection quality. You can still find high quality matches with a full party. The only issue is that a significant player population may be needed to ensure preferring good connection is not met with unbearable search times.-------

Summary: If you have a player on your friends list with whom you have a good connection then you will find enjoyment in this gametype.
-------Edit 3: Alternatively you can do what I did above and drag people from Firefight Doubles and Arcade :D

those are actually excellent solutions, I've wanted something similar to firefight but connected to matchmaking since H2... Your fixes make campaign/firefight skill more on the same level as matchmaking skill, which is very convenient for new players. Halo3+ made your campaign progress irrelevant to your matchmaking skill, and I would like to see that change

Play it, love it, rate it.

I agree whole-heartedly with the OP. Reach firefight is quite dull. Bungie did enhance the AI; however, most of the difficulty comes from increased AI damage and damage resistance. This makes the game quite frustrating, for the player loses all sense of progress. When an enemy is virtually impervious to most conventional forms of damage (three AR mags to take down the shields of just one elite general), the game becomes more frustrating than fun. The player feels as if he/she is not getting anywhere (especially when you unloaded all your ammo on one elite just to be confronted by three more). I have attempted to create a more enjoyable experience with some of my firefight varients. Feel free to give them a shot. If you do, please give me feedback.

Ever wonder what's up there?

This gametype seems a bit too frustrating. I doubt it would even get voted by players, let alone have it's own playlist with like 100+ people at a time.

Because I remembered that I was supposed to test the gametype but I was busy. He typed all that up for me so he at least deserved a response.
