I wouldn't mind having this.

This community's intransigence towards change is breathtaking.

Am I not allowed to not like something that I perceive as a stupid idea? I welcome change, as long as it's necessary and useful. I see no use in a friend's list.
I wouldn't go as far as a friends list, but I support the idea of online tracking with the agreement of the person you're tracking.

Example; Lets say you had a list of people you are currently tracking, and you see a '"friend" you want to start tracking that's not on your list, a message would have to be sent to that person to either accept decline the tracking offer.

I can see something like this really helping with private group management. I haven't worked out the details, but some sort of tracking spam filter would have to be in place.
why does it help you to know when your "friends" are on? And still, there's ustalk. There's no reason to build a feature into the site when a service already exists.

I want a real profile with a VM wall, friends list etc.

It could be optional so that Whiney McWhiner up there didnt have to argue about it.

I will never understand why so many of you continually suggest: a) using groups when there are obvious limitations to that/them; or b) pushing members out of the community by forcing them to use a different site.

In what way shape or form does having another tab open involve FORCING any members to a different site. It's not like you can't be on Bungie.net and ustalk simultaneously. And I don't see why you would need to know when people are online anyway without a chat feature considering the fact that messages are just games of virtual "phone tag" anyway.

Long story short, you're exaggerating (heavily so) the situation to make it seem like I and others with my opinion are somehow dismembering the community by pointing out that the feature everyone is suggesting exist already happens to exist on another website. A website, that you can just have open in another tab located directly adjacent to the one (or more) you have open of BNet.

You seem religious about this so I have to ask; How would the implementation of a friends list affect you?

When he was younger, he was the one who always had the jokes and riddles that would keep the spirits of the Spartans high. Over the years however, his lifetime of combat had hardened him, as it had all of the Spartans. Within Will, John thought, something special had been lost.

It's the purpose of this site that people seem to be missing when they start asking for social networking functionality(ies). Until that purpose changes, it's going to stay pretty much the same, "a gathering place to discuss Bungie in a public manner".

I for one believe that the addition of a friends list and chat feature would detract from normal forum participation much the way people retreat from the public forums when we see a sudden increase in new users.

I lol'd at the absurd miscommunication that occurs whenever dibbs post something. Perhaps his brain is so highly evolved that he can no longer clearly communicate with lesser life forms, even among his own species.

If someone was asking to buy computer parts I would probably point them in the direction of Newegg instead of demanding Bungie to accommodate that desire.

In the same vein, if someone wants a user centric experience over a community centric experience, I would point them in the direction of a social networking site as opposed to saying this site should change to accommodate that desire.

Edit: The other example was somewhat of an exaggeration, so let's try this: I want to have political discussions. Should B.net be forced to adapt to my demands, or would you suggest I take that desire elsewhere to a website that's actually devoted to political discussion?

I know groups would be a logical place to take that desire, but you said they had obvious limitations (which if they hamper a friends list experience could certainly hamper my political discussion experience...)

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

Give me a reason that it's necessary.

Bungie.net as a website is totally unnecessary; it does, however, exist.

I think we've gotten to the point where pushing member off to constantly changing methods of interaction is just a bit silly (email -> IM -> facebook, twitter -> what's next) -- why not strive to keep members here using the identities they want to use instead of the identity they use elsewhere. Not only that but a friends list could be only the beginning. It's entirely possible to do things like compare stats and see groups you might like if only we had a list of people we wanted to interact with.

Bungie.net needs to get rid of Private messaging because I can just send a member a message via xbox live.

Right?

:)

I personally would like to see how many of my Xbox Live friends have active Bungie profiles. It's too tedious to click on 97 different profiles to see if they have an account.

a frnds list would work.

Hello! I'm Bunie.net's resident medical student (hell i'm sure there are more but I'm the only one who openly declares it!) I love my emblem, and I am periodically active.
I have a Twitter

A quote notifier would be a better idea, much more useful.

Features are meant to make life easier, and that's what this would do. Over my time on Bnet and Xbox I've created bonds with some good friends. Why is knowing when they're online such a problem?

We have something that tells when they're online for Xbox, why can't we incorporate that to Bnet?

I like the idea of a friendslist, maybe with a handy button so I could PM them.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I honestly think it is people a) afraid of change or B) don't want anything new.

Give me a good reason as to why it shouldn't be included.

I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

But the impact on the site bandwidth could potentially take away from the amount of PMs I can hold at one time in my inbox, it'll mean I'll have to delete countless memories!

Honestly though, I don't see why there's such a fight about this. It's not like anyone would be forced to use this feature.
