Subject: Why are people so strict about this being a forum?

Live a little.

PyroSnip3 - Xbox Live Gamertag

As in, when people suggest things for Bungie.net that are products of another type of site like Facebook. They only reply with "Bungie.net is a forum, not a social networking site" honestly, what's wrong with Bungie.net turning social? Why not make a hybrid of Bungie.net?

Friends list, a chat feature, a customizable profile picture (implemented coup, not a third party script) and keep the forums. If this isn't a social networking site, what's the point of seeing other peoples profiles? All we can see is when they joined, a signature and an avatar? Bungie.net should at least experiment.

I'm not asking for a like button, just some more... user friendly tools.

I agree. Staying exactly the same isn't good, IMO.

Why do people in ship mutinies always ask for "better treatment"? I'd ask for a pinball machine, because with all that rocking back and forth, you'd get a lot of free games.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Friend's List = Group Member List
Chat feature = #bungienet
customizable profile = I don't want to see wang on this site
Seeing other people's profiles = So we can see their gamertag and what groups they are in

The only thing I'm against is a chat feature. In my opinion that defeats the purpose of having a forum.

Friends list? See thread down yonder.
Chat feature? Who would keep the spam out, we would need specific chat moderators, which would mean we would have to find people who aren't biased and willing to spend all their time in chat.
Customizable Avatars? You really think bungie.net is mature enough to handle that?

I have no problem with new features making b.net more social, I have problems with useless features that aren't necessary.

Why should we need to use such long features to do the simplest things, think about it; if people are actually using a chat feature, what's the problem with adding it to the site?

Obviously there would be some sort of filter with the customizable profile and if you wanted to see only that on someones profile, the little drop down button on someones post should tell them that, it doesn't need pages dedicated to seeing someones groups and gamertag...

I don't know, the guys at the Coup group do it pretty well. Would take a better reporting system though, like 3 reports before the avatar moderators start looking into it.

Enh. Some things just aren't meant to be.

Chat feature? Go hang around the Flood for a little while and you'll know why that's a bad idea.

Custom Avatars? Go hang around the Flood for a little while and you'll know why that's a bad idea.

As for the friend's list, there's one thing you can do: add them on Xbox Live.

  • 09.17.2011 7:11 PM PDT

Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

0x0 x0x 0x0 000 000 x0x 000
x0x 0x0 0x0 0xx 000 0x0 000
x0x x0x x00 0xx 0x0 x0x 0x0

I have seen you future

I think that people are naturally terrified of change. Even if something will improve their lives (or in this case their B.net experience) they won't want to lose what they have.

As for the more specific features, a friend's list may be nice, but really you can keep track of everyone who you know in your inbox. Still, not a horrible idea.

A chat feature would close conversations. The point of forums is to have a public discussion which allows everyone to participate and contribute. Things that need to be kept of the public forums can be taken care of by PM, and a chat feature may enhance this, but it would steer people away from the forums. The other problem with the idea of a chat feature is implementation. A chat type feature that requires you to be online needs two way feedback, or your computer has to tell B.net that you are online. Right now all B.net knows is the last thing you clicked on and when you clicked on it. It doesn't actually know if you are still on the page or not.

I am scared for customizable profile pictures. I remember when people figured out how to post pictures in forum posts. Some things can never be unseen.

Chat features, surely, having someone as a friend on Bungie.net would allow you to instantly chat to them, where as not being friends you wouldn't be allowed to chat, so you wouldn't get spam.

Custom Avatars, have you seen how coup is handled? They do it pretty good, and I think people could easily just stick to how they report now, just like an offensive post but avatar.

What you're suggesting would put a new strain on our moderators, forcing the web team to find more trustworthy people who would be willing to become moderators. I see no reason to make more threads of, "Decline in moderation!" "Y moderators no doing thier j0b!"

Reporting? You mean like the thing people barely do now?

To flaunt seniority, of course. Keep in mind that this is a game dev's site. Adding like buttons and such are probably not on their priority list.

I'm partial to some improvements, but implementations such as a like/dislike system would certainly be unwanted and detrimental. People stating that Bungie.net isn't a social networking site are typically dodging an argument.

This.

I hate to say it, but the majority of Bungie.net isn't mature enough to handle the kind of freedoms some of you people want. We would need more (and stricter) moderation to keep this place from degenerating too badly.

people spazz and troll about everthing a post on the forums, I hate some of the people on these forums now... I was just wondering about some halo 4 titles and then a bunch of people started spazzing and trolling and having babies and stuff and told me to get the -blam!- out :(

I lol'd at the absurd miscommunication that occurs whenever dibbs post something. Perhaps his brain is so highly evolved that he can no longer clearly communicate with lesser life forms, even among his own species.

Other sites sell cookies...I'VE GOT IT BUNGIE.NET SHOULD SELL COOKIES!

It's about what the site is designed to do. The fact remains that this isn't a social networking site; it just isn't. Half hearted attempts to replicate similar features that other websites have will be ineffective and a waste of time. Tell me why would you prefer to have an xbox live friends list, a facebook friends list, and a bungie.net friends list over having a single friends list? Wouldn't it be easy to take the best one of the three and just have all of your friends in one place (instead of having Bungie hire staff who do not even contribute towards the primary purpose of the company- making a game - and instead attempt to turn Bungie.net into a competitive social networking site).

One of the major tenets of economics is specialization - Do what you're best at. Other sites have perfected friends lists and social networking. How would trying to replicate that system be beneficial to a vidoo game developer?

Bungie.net, arguably yes by your definition. Forums, though, only at a tremendous stretch.
