Subject: Why are people so strict about this being a forum?

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

Because that is a dumb way for it to evolve.

Exactly. This is a game developer's website, where we discuss Bungie, the website and the games. No need to make this site something it's not. I'm all for adding things that make this site more user friendly and all that jazz, but adding friend's lists and chat aren't the way to improve on the site.

if people are actually using a chat feature, what's the problem with adding it to the site?
Assuming by chat feature here you mean one that is indeed like #bungienet and not an individual to individual type then the reason is fairly simple: You can't kick people for being terrible users. (Well you could, but it'd be opening the gates to pages of threads about 'baaaw so and so kicked me for being bad, I don't think I was bad')

Forums are social networking sites.
Not really, no.
"an online community of people with a common interest who use a Web site or other technologies to communicate with each other and share information" - Random House

Forums are social networking sites.

Bungie.net even more so because of groups, commenting on files, etc.
Bungie.net, arguably yes by your definition. Forums, though, only at a tremendous stretch.
What?
1) It isn't my definition, it's a legitimate dictionary.
2) The Forums are the biggest social networking aspect of Bungie.net. Forums in general are social networking sites. I mean, how different is Facebook's feed from a list of forum topics?

Key

Personalized profile pictures would turn out terribly. Genitals everywhere.

Chat... meh. If you're going to chat with someone and you know them that well, you can go on Facebook or something.

Friends List: the people in favor of this have still yet to give me ONE reason as to why we need a friends list.

And how are the tools we have NOT user friendly?

Chat... meh. If you're going to chat with someone and you know them that well, you can go on Facebook or something.
There are numerous users on this site who I'm happy to talk to in real time, and plenty who I do chat to. That doesn't mean I want them interacting with my non internet life via my facebook.

Yeah, these are all things that people will find a way to abuse and thusly need monitored. Then again we could hike a premium to use the forums/services and pay the moderators!

As in, when people suggest things for Bungie.net that are products of another type of site like Facebook. They only reply with "Bungie.net is a forum, not a social networking site" honestly, what's wrong with Bungie.net turning social? Why not make a hybrid of Bungie.net?

Friends list, a chat feature, a customizable profile picture (implemented coup, not a third party script) and keep the forums. If this isn't a social networking site, what's the point of seeing other peoples profiles? All we can see is when they joined, a signature and an avatar? Bungie.net should at least experiment.

I'm not asking for a like button, just some more... user friendly tools.

I'll keep my basic forum functions for free and the moderators unpaid and overworked, thank you very much.

It's because of something Achronos once said that's been twisted, "paraphrased", and taken out of context to suit any argument against anything related to social networking at all.

The only thing he ever said was "This isn't Facebook or MySpace", and "You have to understand - bungie.net's primary purpose is providing a community for Bungie games. We don't want to be a general social networking site".

He never said anything about not implementing features on the aforementioned sites here. In fact, other topics point to the contrary.

  • 09.17.2011 9:28 PM PDT

Goodbye...

Well, Coup is rather nice. Lots of people have it already. If Bungie was to institute a customization system, having it in a similar format would be great.

I also like the idea of a friend's list, too.

Also, maybe give people the option to lock their own threads, in case a flamewar erupts?

Random note to mods: Spammer in the Reach forum right now.

OP - You're a dumbass with the reading comprehension skills of a second grader.

Can someone tell me what's wrong with these two, this made me LOL hard.

I'd like to have the chat for groups and forums, but that's all. I like the simplicity of Bungie which is probably the reason I stay. I don't like over complex sites like Facebook. I liked it three years ago when I first got it, but now it's pretty much myspace only a bit simpler. It's really complex now though.

When he was younger, he was the one who always had the jokes and riddles that would keep the spirits of the Spartans high. Over the years however, his lifetime of combat had hardened him, as it had all of the Spartans. Within Will, John thought, something special had been lost.

What?
1) It isn't my definition, it's a legitimate dictionary.
But you are using someone else's well-worded definition to explain your definition of what this forum is, in your side of the argument.. therefore your definition.

2) The Forums are the biggest social networking aspect of Bungie.net. Forums in general are social networking sites. I mean, how different is Facebook's feed from a list of forum topics?

Facebook's newsfeed doesn't have the singular purpose that this site has. It's only a "forum" in the sense that it gathers short little headliners about life, and allows people to comment on them. It doesn't garner drawn out discussion about cult/enthusiast topics. And for two the "feed" here is completely public. On FB everyone's feed is a different and unmoderated experience exclusive to you and the people you choose to share it with. You control/moderate your own experience there. It's your friendships that are at stake when you are out of line. Forums are anonymous, and separate from real life. It is the purpose of this site that your missing. People that want social networking features are all missing the point of what forums like this are for. Granted we are a unique community that "gathers" here, but we gather with the purpose of discussing Bungie.

As far as features and plain functionality. I think of it this way. This is a forum.. we're on one end of the spectrum, and sites like Twitter are on the other end. Facebook is somewhere in between. Now, I'm all up for new and fresh ideas and improvements to this site. Let's just not forget what it's here for in the first place.

It's about what the site is designed to do. The fact remains that this isn't a social networking site; it just isn't.
Could you provide a more substantial reason, please?
How about the entirety of my post? It has reasons which, inexplicably, you seem to have overlooked.

Let's try this. Social networking sites are user centric; they feature a user homepage which is the main forum for interaction. Users get to pick and choose which people get to comment on user dependent input.

The Bungie forums are group or community centric. Topics are created on a global board and then users pick and choose which ones they want to comment on. Individuals are given some level of attention, however the focus is not on individual users but on the topics themselves. Updates and changes and apps have been designed to enhance the community centric experience. The inclusion of a "friends list" (or similar feature) does nothing to add to this experience and instead shifts the main points of interest to individual users.

The biggest issue here is that there are already well established sites that do this; sites not devoted to a video game company and the products it makes (thus allowing for more topics of discussion). It isn't a question of "why shouldn't Bungie have this feature" it's "why would you ever want Bungie to have it". It just does not make sense when there are already well established services that do exactly what you want Bungie to be doing.

What are we supposed to be discussing here?

"Nothing in the 'Verse can stop me."

I personally wish more forums acted like the Rooster Teeth forums. They have profiles with journals, friendlists, post ratings, it's pretty good. They've turned their own site into a large social network and I don't see why Bungie couldn't do it too; to some extent.

Live a little.

PyroSnip3 - Xbox Live Gamertag

Exactly, this doesn't have to be just a dev website, it could expand into so much more because it has the potential, maybe a few of my ideas are wrong but Bungie.net does need some change. The chat feature would only be 1-to-1 and only available if you're friends with the other user. Why is that so bad? You don't really need moderators for that.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

I wouldn't mind a chat feature or a friend's list.

  • 09.18.2011 6:01 AM PDT

I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

I was never huge into the social network scene. Facebook and Myspace, the only thing that ever caught my interest was twitter and all it's used for now is to update what games I'm currently playing because I'm too lazy to turn off that function.

However, with that being said, there are certain bits and pierces from those types of sites that I could see the forums benefiting from. At the moment though I'm only waiting for the PM "Sent" box to be implemented on the main site as it has with the Bungie app. Aside from that I could see a more expanded user profile as Bungie expands its user base across multiple platforms, perhaps a friends list, maybe a few other minor tweaks here and there. I wouldn't expect too much as Achronos has mentioned in the past that he doesn't want to turn this into a generic social networking site, he still wants to keep it Bungie centric.

Now would I use an expanded profile or friends list? Maybe the latter, but like my Facebook... any profile feature would probably remained empty. But it's not about just me, it's about the community and if it's deemed beneficial to the community I can't see it hurting anything.

Blah, blah, blah, Specter Wolf just woke up and is already ranting, blah. Whatever.

I don't really care either way. I just don't see them putting the effort into changing the forums into something else. I have the feeling that if Bungie wanted to make a social type aspect, they would do it in a separate grouping. So when you hover over "Community" you see an additional area.
