If a spammer replies to a post, and there is nobody that can read it, did they really spam at all?

Okay, here's the thought... It's a lot like a perma-ban, except the offender can still post and edit like a regular end user, but the catch is that their post is flag as invisible to the rest of the community. Hidden from our view, but shown in his 'tagged' view.

So, while the spammer is thinking he's living the thug life, unbenounced to him he is just pissing into the wind.

If I had any clout with the web team, I might look into implementing such a measure for the severest of spam offenders. But again that's just me.

cars, girls & cake all day everyday

Pretty sure Recon came up with this exact idea some months ago...

  • 09.18.2011 1:19 AM PDT

Left here a long time ago.

Recon independently formulated this idea a while ago, and before that, other sites have implemented it under the name "hellban".

I don't like it.

Isn't this Recon Number 54s idea?
Yep.

Though I still like it regardless of who's saying it. It's great.

Or we could just ban him.

Or we could just ban him.
You're missing the point. That way they just need to create a new account. But this way? They won't actually know if they're banned. So they'll keep going until it becomes obvious that people aren't replying anymore. It eats up more of their time. That's the point.

I know how it works, I'm saying banning is far more simpler.

And fun.

That gave me a great idea! Firefox, multiple tabs open to The Flood forum, and Macro Express.

But TGP is right, as awesome as it sounds, it really would only be sometime before any spammer, troll, etc figured it out and then they'd just sit out their ban as normal.

I don't get how having two browsers open helps them at all but...
Yes, they'd figure it out eventually. Then they would need to either make a new account or wait until they think the ban is over (3 days? 7? 14? Perma? Who knows?). But the point is that they'd waste time before realizing it. Not to mention it would just piss them off.

No downside to this really as long as it is used properly.

But yeah, how could they possibly figure it out simply with two browsers considering on their account it would ALWAYS look like the post was there? Riddle me that batman.

I heard about that stuff yesterday. 23 years, right? Tough competition.

Anyways, you should try finding Recon's original post. Also, sounds like a good idea.

Two different browsers, two different accounts. Assuming both aren't banned, one account open just to keep tabs on the spamming account. Perhaps they wouldn't go through the trouble, but those dead set on spamming always seem to have an ace up their sleeves.

Uh .. all they would have to do is make a few posts, save them, log out, and see if they are there.

Hell, you could use two different browsers, and have two different accounts active at the exact same time. It's not complicated.

Regardless, I still like the idea, it would work for quite some time for most of the spammers.

I liked this idea when it came out, and I think it would be hilarious to imagine someone trolling and getting increasingly mad that nobody was responding to them.

Seems someone else things as I do.

And I'd just like to go on the record to say I never said it was a bad idea, just not the super awesome fantastic idea some think it is. It would still be amusing to think about and would trip up a lot of spammers.

This was thought up almost a year ago. I think it will be overused, instead of just using on trolls and spammers. Think about it. What if you were one of the users that gets blacklisted without knowing about it.

Ahhh, I did not know Recon already proposed this idea! Great minds do think a like. Funny coincidence, Recon created that post on my birthday! (No wonder I didn't read it, I was partying like it was my last day on earth!)

As for the detection and circumventing of this method, there is not much else that can be done. The more hoops you give a spammer to jump through the harder it is for them to accomplish their repetitive tasks. But the task needs to be an annoyance, not a challenge to bypass. Perhaps silent bans combined with circumstantial threshold based CAPTCHAs will be enough to deter any unwelcome spammers.

Then both accounts get the silent ban.
Again, I don't see what having two browsers does. They can do that now if they want.
