Two different browsers, two different accounts. Assuming both aren't banned, one account open just to keep tabs on the spamming account. Perhaps they wouldn't go through the trouble, but those dead set on spamming always seem to have an ace up their sleeves.
Then both accounts get the silent ban.
Again, I don't see what having two browsers does. They can do that now if they want.
:/

The reason I brought up two browsers is because you can have two different accounts logged in with two different sets of cookies and everything, so they're pretty much independant of each other. You could check one to see if your spamming account has been "silently banned".

They could do that now, but the site declares to you that you've been banned so there's absolutely no point in doing that.

Having both accounts have the "silent ban" would be pointless, because the second account still wouldn't be able to see the first account's crap, confirming that he's been banned.

All in all, it's a system that has plenty of ways to work around that I don't think is really worth the effort. It might decrease it a little, but only a little. Spammers will be spammers.

Ah yeah Wolf explained it to me in a PM just now. I didn't even think about that.

I still like the idea though. It's devious.

  • 09.18.2011 10:03 AM PDT

I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

Yes, it is quite devious and would definitely catch the less witty spammers. I can almost see the treads now when they create an alt or come back from their ban.

"Not funny Bungie!"

"Anyone else having problems with their posts not showing up?"

There is just something epic about pistols.

I don't know, this seems a bit harsh and unusually cruel. I mean, think of all the time of that persons life he/she would be wasting.

Spamming is a waste of time.

All of that "work" is (sooner or later) hidden forever. Nothing to point at and say "yep, that was me" and with a neverending stream of alts, no time to build up a history so that people know or even remember "that one member".

It's an attempt to gain fame by being infamous (which is easier) but the way things work here, there may be whispers of a name months later, but no one really remembers the person/persona, and there is nothing to see for all of that time and effort either.

I agree spamming is a waste of time, but still. It is still inhumane in my opinion. Leading someone on and making them think they are doing something is kind of almost like insanity. If the person ever found out it would be such a terrible feeling.

Who would think to do that considering that feature isn't currently implemented?

That gave me a great idea! Firefox, multiple tabs open to The Flood forum, and Macro Express.

Any proper spammer would just have two browsers open to check.

-TGP-

But TGP is right, as awesome as it sounds, it really would only be sometime before any spammer, troll, etc figured it out and then they'd just sit out their ban as normal.
I don't get how having two browsers open helps them at all but...
Yes, they'd figure it out eventually. Then they would need to either make a new account or wait until they think the ban is over (3 days? 7? 14? Perma? Who knows?). But the point is that they'd waste time before realizing it. Not to mention it would just piss them off.

No downside to this really as long as it is used properly.
This...

But yeah, how could they possibly figure it out simply with two browsers considering on their account it would ALWAYS look like the post was there? Riddle me that batman.

Conclusion to the OP's thesis: It's either inhumane or the best thing even contemplated.

Either way, it will probably never even be speculated upon by Achronos since he doesn't even take 1% of the community's advice of making this website better.

What a shame, and that's why I see no point in these threads.

If nobody takes anything from the discussion, than what's the point of it?
You just invalidated the majority of discussions made on this forum. The point of discussion is to discuss. The point of discussion is NOT to discuss with swift decisive action to be taken soon there after related specifically to the content of the discussion.

"but no one really remembers the person/persona".

Despite the fact that Cena, Jane, and ShaneDawson are all ideas and anyone can spam like them, that persona is remembered and will be for a while. Everyone's seen a JohnCena post. It isn't like Watermelon King or Porch Day where its spam specific to a small amount of time (I.E. Porch Day or August 16, 2005).

John Cena posts can be done by ANYONE at ANYTIME. I could go do one right now. You could go do one right now. They will never die. Someone will always bring it up. Its like a spammer inside joke. The persona won't be forgotten.

There may never be a specific person who can go and make a thread saying "remember that one time I was John Cena and spammed the flood?", the persona of JohnCena as a user who is spamming and shock linking to meatspin will still be there.

So who's famous? Who is remembered? Who is Spartacus?

That is my point. There is no "that was me" fame or even infamy to spamming. None. Anyone can claim to be a former disruptor, large scale or not. Anyone trying gets a "so what kid?" and things move along.

True, but imagine how the person who came up with those very ideas feels, despite no one actually truly knowing it was him. I hate to say it, but making such an impact on the community would feel accomplishing, even if it was in such a negative manner.

The persona is famous. Sure a little 11 year old who's brother taught them how to avoid bans could go make a John Cena post. But no one knows that it was them. They see it as John Cena.

People will come into the Septagon and make a thread asking mods to go to the Flood because "John Cena is spamming the Flood" or "Jane is going crazy in this thread". They don't say "someone is posting JohnCena shock sites". Who "Spartacus" is on a personal level is irrelevant due to the fact that it's still thought of as "Spartacus" and not "one of those Spartacus people".

As long as the person is still thought of both on a personal and SPECIFIC level as opposed to a vague impersonal reference like "that JohnCena person", then the persona is both effective and concrete.

If you say so.

Here's what I found kind of cool. I was out grocery shopping with my wife earlier. The young man bagging spotted my Bungie t-shirt for Haitian relief and said that he liked/recognized it. I asked him if he was a member of this site, he said yes. No big deal, we just shared a moment of mutual recognition.

That sort of recognition out in the real world and that this community can do that is impressive to me. It can't be accomplished by dodging bans and creating alts. Being the only one that knows "it was me" is a pretty pitiful accomplishment, especially when it's months later and no one gives a damn.
