Subject: The Silent Ban.

Did you tell him who you were?

So who's famous? Who is remembered? Who is Spartacus?

That is my point. There is no "that was me" fame or even infamy to spamming. None. Anyone can claim to be a former disruptor, large scale or not. Anyone trying gets a "so what kid?" and things move along.
True, but imagine how the person who came up with those very ideas feels, despite no one actually truly knowing it was him. I hate to say it, but making such an impact on the community would feel accomplishing, even if it was in such a negative manner.

If you say so.

Here's what I found kind of cool. I was out grocery shopping with my wife earlier. The young man bagging spotted my Bungie t-shirt for Haitian relief and said that he liked/recognized it. I asked him if he was a member of this site, he said yes. No big deal, we just shared a moment of mutual recognition.

That sort of recognition out in the real world and that this community can do that is impressive to me. It can't be accomplished by dodging bans and creating alts. Being the only one that knows "it was me" is a pretty pitiful accomplishment, especially when it's months later and no one gives a damn.

I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

I meant browsers, not tabs. And TGP already explained it nicely.

Who would think to do that considering that feature isn't currently implemented?

Two different browsers, two different accounts. Assuming both aren't banned, one account open just to keep tabs on the spamming account. Perhaps they wouldn't go through the trouble, but those dead set on spamming always seem to have an ace up their sleeves.

The invisible posts idea wouldn't work.

The best alternative would be for people to choose to hide posts by certain members.

Then both accounts get the silent ban.
Again, I don't see what having two browsers does. They can do that now if they want.
:/
If an account is banned, you can use a different browser with another account and it won't be auto banned.

I like the premise of the idea, but whoever was banned *silently* could check to see if his post became viewable in another window/account/etc.

Why not stop by my File Share while you're here?

Only regret is I didn't play more of it.

If you haven't noticed by now, I'm sort of a jerk.

They wouldn't see the post by the other account though. It wouldn't solve anything to do that.

Pretty sure Recon came up with this exact idea some months ago...

For Carnage Apply Within - Fatum Iustum Stultorum

"Do not mistake your rank and number for superiority. The oldest child may learn from the youngest."

At best, the "silent ban" is an ill-conceived idea that actually serves little purpose nor addresses or remedies a given problem. If a user breaks the rules, simply ban them. There is no need to resort to childish punishments to accentuate the ban. Saying otherwise is nothing more than an argument in favor of pointing fingers and feeling superior.

Furthermore, arguing that such a method would curtail or even inhibit the fame seeking propensities of some users is simply exaggerating what is frankly a minor problem, if even a problem at all. Most users simply don't go to the trouble of remembering users unknown to them unless they are directly involved with that person via conversation or confrontation. And no, replying to spam or falling victim to a troll-link does not constitute either.

A better idea would be to place emphasis on the individual user's responsibility to not reply to spam and/or troll posts. If you ignore offending posts in the first place, instead of posting in them (even if only to say "Reported", "This is spam, don't reply" or similar nonsense), there won't be motivation to continue spamming. In other words, it would be more effective to address one of causes of the problem, instead of simply proposing that yet another kiddie band-aid be slapped on it.

OP - You're a dumbass with the reading comprehension skills of a second grader.

Can someone tell me what's wrong with these two, this made me LOL hard.

What's the use of banning the person then if they can still post freely? They'll notice it eventually.

I... what? That's the entire point mate. They can post but they won't know if they're banned. So they just waste their own time.

They'll notice it eventually. Of course, it's the wasted time before that that matters.

When he was younger, he was the one who always had the jokes and riddles that would keep the spirits of the Spartans high. Over the years however, his lifetime of combat had hardened him, as it had all of the Spartans. Within Will, John thought, something special had been lost.

Not sure that wouldn't do more harm than good. That would be a potentially dramatic change.
