Subject: A little more moderation would be good.

I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

While it's not a problem, it has become sort of a concern to me. The lack of moderation that is. Even as I make my own posts this morning I realize that there can be a rather increase lack of moderation around here.

For example when I posted maybe one thread every week, things seemed fine. Maybe it's because I wasn't around enough to see it. But as my activity increased I began to see it a little more each time. Moderation seemed to be on the decline.

Well just a bit ago an idea popped into my head, one that would increase moderation on the site.

This is directed at those who have Posts Per Day (PPD from here on out) up in the 75 to 100+ PPD range, those who lack the notion of moderation. This who often make little more than quick quips about a topic before moving on to do the same in another thread. Or those who add absolutely no discussion value to anything when they post and it seems that their sole purpose is to just... well post.

But not to harp on just them, this would also deter spammers as well and actually utilizes the very tool already in place to stop spamming. Of course I speak of that little 30 second timer. Some of have run into it before and others not at all, but we're all aware of its existence, sitting there, waiting to catch someone.

Well what I suggest is to turn it into a reactive tool into a more proactive once using a sort of tier system based on your PPD. The higher up in the tier you are, the longer the amount of time between becomes for you. Now before anyone freaks out, I haven't decided on just how many posts it would take because it would kick it up a tier, but I do figure adding an addition 15 seconds to the ticker would be a good round number.

So example would be:

Normal - 30sec

Tier 1 - 45sec

Teir 2 - 1min

Personally I think one minute between posting would be enough of a deterrent for "casual" spammers, but not enough to break the balls of forum members who just like to post a lot, sort of a reminder that all things are better in moderation.

Now you may be wondering, it it's based on PPD wouldn't that mean until your PPD average goes down you'd be on this restriction? And to that I say "no". It would just be based on a 24 hour period starting at midnight PST (Bungie's time) and ending at 11:59pm PST. After that you get a fresh start with that looming reminder that the filter is still there... watching you. Always watching.

Perhaps no one will read this and will immediately tell me how awesome the moderation staff is, perhaps I'm the only one that shares this view point and I'll just be um... "made the fool", maybe I'm insane and wish for a super police state sort of forums where all you're rights really are stripped from you and shadow moderators really do roam the forums. But in the end the best I can ask for is a decent discussion.

The moderation team is awesome.

I think you're assuming that troublemakers have a high PPD. I do not believe this is the case.

However people with a high PPD do tend to make a lot of poorly thought out responses. I have nothing against placing restrictions on their posting, so that they will learn to think before they post.

Ask any question. I'll help with anything on site or off.

The moderation team is awesome ,but I think we need more on the team to replace the inactive ones.

Since when were people with high PPDs the ones who broke the rules?

I don't see the point in this.

Do mods mind getting messaged when there is a troublemaker on the loose?

No, PMing a moderator is encouraged if necessary. Just remember, it's Duardo's problem =).

It was based on the larger offenders, JOHN CENA type offenders really. But spammers were still a secondary functions to the main issue which are the less-than-well-thoughtout posts that pop up and which we seem to share a similar opinion on.

Did I say people with high PPD break rules? No, I said they tend to not add very much discussion with their posting habits. Like Tom T mentioned, my belief is that such a system would help them learn to think and make more constructive posts instead of saying everything that just pops into their mind.

Honestly, even though there are a lot in HFCS how many of them are active? If we go by who posts on the forum, then we have about six moderators. However, I'm sure there are more that just lurk around. So, I'll bump it up to ten or twelve people.

I really don't see the harm in adding a new moderator from a timezone that would help will the gaps in when a moderator is on.

  • 09.18.2011 12:56 PM PDT

This is true. Officially speaking, there are four inactive Mods.

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

I find it strange that when we have a decrease in user activity on bungie.net, that people begin to complain more about a decrease in moderator activity.

  • 09.18.2011 1:02 PM PDT

While we do have a decrease in user activity, we do not have a decrease in spamming activity. Quite the contrary, it would seem.

Now, in the quantum moment before the closure, when all become one. One moment left. One point of space and time.

I know who you are.

You are Destiny.

Not necessarily. If anything we could use less moderators now that Halo has been moved and Bungie went 'dark.' Well get a fresh, new batch of recruits when Bungie announces their next IP.

I'm just going to say, that the current moderation activity is tolerable and will get better the more the activity dies down. However, once the new IP gets announced (which will be multiplatform) the activity is going to explode (hopefully) with potentially three times as much players being interested.

  • 09.18.2011 1:07 PM PDT

Less Ninjas? Not really. There's still a ton of spam around here because people can't read the notice that's displayed when you post something. It'd be cool if a post could be automatically locked if it got enough reports.

Oh, of course it's tolerable! God, no, I'm not complaining; I just wanted to point out that some extra Mods wouldn't hurt, seeing as several are inactive.

Your perception of moderators being "inactive" is them not posting, while this may be the case for some of them. Why bother posting when you can hand out bans all day, that's much more fun. The thing is that us members will never see who handed out said ban, although one would automatically form the opinion that it's only the mods who are posting that are banning.

There are currently 31 people who have the word "Ninja" in their name.

Your point being? At least four of them are considered "inactive"
in HFCS. Also, when is the last time you saw Gods Prophet, Nosferatu_Soldie, Sir Fragula, or Skiptrace around these forums? Either posting or receiving a ban from them. Two of those people are considered "Master Mods" in HFCS.

Regardless of moderator posts I'd say that we have a pretty grasp of who's active and not.

But let's just play with the thought of a mod enforcing the rules without ever posting, is that really the type of mod we want? I thought the whole purpose of volunteers was that the mods should be involved.

Anyhow, I think an addition of more mods should be in the current (acticve) mods interest. I can only speak for myself here but I feel like I've given the current (active) mods a lot of unwarranted crap due to the fact that they cannot be online 24/7. This is the most common complaint around here and while it has nothing to do with the mods performance it easily spills over and affects other things related to moderation too, things we probably wouldnt have thought about if it hadnt been for the initial complaint.
