Unfortunately, this will probably never be the case. This community has an unhealthy preoccupation with inertia, such that changes, when they do occur, are mostly trivial.
The only argument that ever seems to be fielded against permitting religious and political discussion is that people will become so impassioned that they'll start insulting one another. Those that field this argument have perhaps forgotten that this is already the case in virtually every thread posted to these fora.
Still, what more can you expect from a community which regards the introduction of a post count as controversial?
