There's too little of moderators moderating discussions in the Flood. Hi there, Recon Number 54, nice to meet you. We've met. I'm insulted.
On a serious note though you know what I mean. You see perfectly legitimate threads talking about, I don't know let's say, the Arab Spring and how it will change the political landscape of the Middle East. Why lock that thread and possibly ban the OP? If there's a rotten member in that thread derailing the discussion punish him or her.
Saying they are permitted would then not allow any discretion or preventative measures.
Right now, I can (and do) lock anything that (in my judgement) is improperly framed, likely to devolve, or that I know I am not going to be around to watch like a hawk.
If the type of discussion is globally greenlighted, then there is no such ability on my part. I have to let the crap and dangerous topics live.
No thanks. Right now I can see something that while having a political element, rationalize it as being more about current events, criminal justice, social issues and less about politics and do my best to encourage the discussion to remain on the "safer" side of that line.
If there was no prohibition..... well, any ability to moderate, guide, coach, or to say "tough call, but I will allow it for now", those options would be gone.
Opening the flood gates is not the solution (pardon the pun) for people who want a glass of water.
