Humans thought 20 ODPs were enough to protect Reach.
Well then military brass is retarted. They should of known 20 ODPs wouldn't be enough if the covies ever discovered Reach. It's their military and technological stronghold. It should of been protected AS MUCH AS or BETTER than Earth, considering the fact that Reach is only 10 Light years away from Earth. Reach was arguably the most important world the UNSC had, besides Earth. They should of kept more ships at Reach.
I agree with this, the humans should've learned that covie navy tactics are mostly just rush and overwhelm your enemy, rather than well thought-out strategies. Considering this, and the number of ships the covies had on their side they should've built alot more than 20 ODP's and should've had a decent "standing army" of frigates/destroyers etc near Reach.
This way the Long night of solace wouldn't've been able to soften the UNSC defenses up so much on the ground and the UNSC would've had a better chance on the ground.
Also if anyone knows, how many ODP's did earth have at the time regrets ships attacked it?
About, or exactly 300(Earth).
And no, the ODPs were important enough for both Human and Covenant forces to spent a large amount of resources to defend them (ODPs and power plants).
It is capable of destroying 2 shielded Covenant cruisers (Corvettes?) with one round.
Besides, 300 was really extreme. Each ODP needed a dedicated power station below orbit to supply it with enough power to fire.
