I think we need to add a little information bar underneath a users profile name that tells the Viewer if if the person is online or offline. I think this would help a bunch. Reason being is because when I'm waiting for this guy to reply to my reply that i made on his topic and i can tell if he has gone offline or not and then i don't have to waste 2 hours sitting there wondering if he is online or not.
Thoughts on this idea?
Thanks

-Quaere verum.

Got a report? Use the report tool or send a pm.
Chairleg Productions presents: 'Console Wars' and 'Games as Art?' (also on Halo Waypoint).

Firstly, there's no need to double-post a thread.

Secondly, this has been discussed many times before. I think we're all agreed that it would be a cool feature and one which is highly possible now. So here's hoping we'll see something in the future.

Let me make sure that I understand though.

You want a feature that shows that a particular member has a browser page open to this site? Or is online at all?

I doubt the second will be likely or possible. Sure the technology is there in part (using MSN Messenger and XBL) to see if there is a connected presence related to a particular Passport, but I don't think that the privacy policies of those services allow for displaying the online status to anyone other than individuals who were authorized by the passport holder (like friends lists).

If it is the latter (someone having a Bungie.Net page open) there's still no way to show that they are going to visit a particular thread, see you post and reply to it.

Or am I misunderstanding your desire?

I've always been of the opinion that eventually there will be better and more seamless integration of MS Passport, XBL, MSN Messenger and other Passport-enabled site/services. Something that I would love to see would be the ability (once both members agreed to allow the ability) for one member to be on MSN Messenger and another on XBL (360 appears more likely) and for the two to know and see that the other is online. Since both XBL and MSN support audio and text content in messages, being able to "ping" the other person and converse (text or voice) would be a HUGE help.

I think that things are headed in that way. But the technology isn't the only hurdle. The privacy policies and getting the various systems to interact without violating any of the terms that those services have made with their members.... that could be the really tricky part.

i think the first paragraph is what i was talking about but the second paragraph does sound pretty useful.
couldn't you just modify the the privacy rights? (< dumb question)

Privacy is a pretty hot topic.

Most online services have a very lengthy and horribly complex privacy policy that is there to assure their members what the service provider will and will not do with the member's information. Those privacy policies are legal protection for both the members and the service.

For example, I believe that the Bungie.Net privacy policy states that they will not sell or give out information to 3rd parties about you without your consent. Now that sounds good, but it clashes with this idea. The fact that someone is online and visiting this site is "information about the member" and no member has (yet) agreed that this information can or should be shared with others.

So not only would the mechanism to share this information need to be made, but there would need to be an option in "my settings" to allow a member to share their online status or chose to remain "stealthy".

That would just be internal to this site. If the information starts crossing from service to service, it can get really complicated really quickly.

I'm not saying that it's impossible, just that getting the feature written and working is only one part of making it happen.

oh ya i see what your saying there Rn54. HM, well. I'm not sure what else to say about this. we could take the information from the users xbox live account and code it to where to viewer can see if he is currently on line on xbox live under the users name. ( that idea is kid of blurry)
