I don't want to see Halo CE die out and fade away, but that may well happen unless more people get involved...I would like to do my bit by setting up a ded for CE but don't seem to be able to.I have been running a Halo PC ded with no probs,so what am I doing wrong? If anyone can give me either a link to the info I need or help me out personally,I would be eternally grateful!(Well, maybe not eternally...that's a VERY long time!!!)

Good news. The Halo CE dedicated server is part of the Halo CE download, so you don't have to download anything extra. You may need to find the gametype fix, but that's another issue.

Head on over to the Gearbox Serer Administration Forum and all your questions can easily be answered. Be sure to read all the pertinent stickies at the top of the forum. And make sure to come back and let us know about the server when you're done. Maybe we can give you some feedback on the game rotations or whatever.

There arent going to be anymore patches for halo pc version anymore after 1.05 so that possibly might get more ppl into ce, and hopefully from sept 12 to 16th get at least 1000 ppl playing on hao ce! then we'll get the patch we've been fight for! so come and play halo ce! you will be thanked.

This hasn't helped...I'm well aware that everything is included in the CE package, but all I ever get when I try to run it is 'using profile path'.What the hell is going on?!Oh,and I have spent HOURS on the gearbox site trying to find a COMPLETE tut on this, but I can't find one. There must be someone out there who actually WANTS to help....Just one final point-Making CE a success isn't just about playing it.Perhaps if there was more support for each other from within the community, others might start to hear what a nice place it is to be,bringing more players and therefore making it harder to ignore...but that's just my opinion...

I'm no sure how to set up a dedicated server but make sure you dowload the delagginator.

I've never had the resources to set up a DS, so I haven't messed with it much, but from reading a few posts I can see that it's just like setting up a Halo PC DS. You still have to configure the initialization file and you can add a few new init commands (like MotD). The message "using profile path" should go away. That's just what it displays while it starts up.

Thanks for replying, but I'm sure I'm missing something here...It seems that no matter what I do I just don't seem to be able to get it to work.I have already downloaded the delagenator for use on the server, but thanks for that anyway.I think what I really need is to chat with someone who has already set up and run a ded for CE.As I've mentioned before,I've run a PC ded with no complications whatsoever,so can't really see the problem.I'm not trying to run on my main machine, and I have a completely seperate PC for the SOLE purpose of running my ded.The specs are; AMD Athlon XP2000,512mb ram and 200 gig 72000 rpm all running on a 1mb connection...I have gone down two seperate routes to get this working, neither of which do.The first was to set everything up in the same folder where CE was installed. Was this wrong? The second was to copy the CE DED file into my Halo PC DED program and set up from there...Didn't work either.I'm starting to get a little bit frustrated now...Someone please help!

I don't know, man. I just set up my own DS in a bout five minutes, just to see what the problem was. I created an init.txt file in my Halo CE root directory (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition) and put all the initialization commands in that sucker (just like in Halo PC). I then double-clicked on the haloceded.exe and waited for it to load up. I then played with some commands to make sure it was working and shut 'er down.

Here is what my init.txt looked like when I was just messing around. It's mostly just copied from the Halo PC DS FAQ over at Gbx.

sv_name "Buttweasle Express"

sv_public true

sv_maxplayers 16

sv_rcon_password asdf

sv_mapcycle_timeout 20

sv_tk_ban 5

sv_tk_penalty 5m 1h 8h 1d

sv_tk_cooldown 5m

sv_tk_grace 5s

sv_mapcycle_add bloodgulch classic_ctf_pro

sv_mapcycle_add timberland classic_ctf_pro

sv_mapcycle_add damnation classic_ctf_pro

sv_mapcycle_add dangercanyon classic_ctf_pro

sv_mapcycle_add carousel classic_ctf_pro

sv_mapcycle_add gephyrophobia classic_ctf_pro

sv_mapcycle_add infinity classic_ctf_pro

sv_mapcycle_begin

See if you can get that far. Don't worry about the Delagginator until you've got a server up and running and you're comfortable configuring the settings. Also, if you run into any problems, please be fairly specific when posting about them here.

One thing you do not want to do is copy anything to your Halo PC setup. Halo CE is totally independent of Halo PC.

No joy...I've even tried setting up identical to your's,but with a different name. After the initial 'using profile path',I'm told that 'sv_name' is not specified in init.txt (although it is) and it reverts to default.Fine.I could handle that, but then the server fails to start when it comes to the first map.The only command I can then give is quit...Not even sv_end_game...WTF is going on!!!

I'm told that 'sv_name' is not specified in init.txt (although it is)

Huh. Make sure you use quotation marks around anything that has spaces in it. So for example, if your server name was The Best Server Evar!, you'd write:

sv_name "The Best Server Evar!"

Does it give you an error message when it fails to load a map? Could you copy and paste your init.txt file and let us see what you have written there? You are using the same maps I was using? Huh. Might try reinstalling to see if you're missing some files or something, since you were copying files back and forth between HPC and HCE earlier.

I have already done everything you recomend...I've tried reinstalling three times this evening alone! At the moment,CE isn't even installed because I'm really starting to lose my patience with it.I've left it installed on the machine that I use so that I can join and host normal games, but I relly don't know what else I can do now...The ded wouldn't even recognize my max player settings, everting back to the default 16!!!

My latest init.txt looks like:sv_name "Muffmeisters_DS"
sv_public True
sv_maxplayers 10
sv_tk_ban 3
sv_mapcycle_timeout 15
sv_mapcycle_add bloodgulch "My CTF Human(V)"
sv_mapcycle_add sidewinder "My CTF Human(V)"
sv_mapcycle_begin

Somewhat on the small side, but it is just to get the thing up and running. Now,I know this works because I write the same init.txt for the PC Ded.I just don't know....

Try using a normal gametype and see if you can get it working. Once you have a normal gametype running, then see what you can do about custom gametypes. I know some custom gametypes don't behave normally on the CE DS. There is a fix for this, but first tell me that you can run normal gametypes. *prays*

Nope...still no joy. It's as if my init is completely invisible.I'm having no luck with it no matter what I try.It doesn't look like I'm gonna be able to get my server up for the big push on CE that's going to start today after all.I think, like so many others, that it's getting to the point where there really isn't any point in continuing. There isn't much else I can do now.I've tried on both of my computers and get the same thing happen.Still not having any trouble with Halo PC DED though...strange that!

Wait,it gets worse...(sorry,couldn't resist...hehehe)Right,I have managed to get my server up and running, but there is one minor problem.I'm not overly bothered about it,but it would be nice to resolve it...I can't put my message of the day on.To get my server up,I thought I would have one more try by copying my init.txt from my PC Ded into my CE folder.I know it shouldn't make any difference, but it has!Once it was in there,I edited it to show custom maps and gametypes and there was only the small problem of the message of the day...After this post,I'm gonna try writing it again OUTSIDE of my CE folder, and then copying it in.Shouldn't make any difference, but for some strange reason,it does...Completely barmy! Thanks for your help and patience, and I hope to see you on the battlefield some time soon...(I'll let you have one kill free...hehehe)

Cool. Good to hear that worked for you. My bet is that some small detail was typed wrong in the other one that we both were overlooking. To make a MotD is very simple.

Create a .txt called motd.txt with your message, place it in your Halo CE DS folder. Now edit your init with the line:

sv_motd motd.txt

Thanks for your help and patience, and I hope to see you on the battlefield some time soon
Me too, provided the ping time is tollerable (I'm in AZ, USA). We'll see what we can do. ;)

I'm not going to go on about the motd thing, but needless to say,I've already tried what you suggest...Hehehe.I'm based in the UK,so my server would probably be too stretched for us to have a decent thrash on it,but I'm gonna be looking out for you...Cheers again dude.Laters.
