Bungie portrays their Halo in a different fashion than the authors out there.
Bungie tends to be a lot more lenient, with a bit more laid-back writing, but dramatic (or badass) when it needs to be.
I've noticed that anything not written by Bungie is usually extremely dramatic 24/7.

I kind of liked the style which ODST was presented in, though.

Speaking of chuckles, let's all lol at IonicPaul, who makes friends with bugs to make up for his lack of human contact.

They're all replacements. "This late in the war? Who isn't?" They're not the cream of the crop. They're still talented soldiers.

ODST's are supposed to be near crazy, dangerous, on the edge people. While reading the cole protocol (In 5 days btw) I noticed the ODST trooper division is Battle hardened marines.

In ODST however, they are cowards, disrespectful, and seem less motivated than the average marine. Some examples are in the prepare to drop cutscene. Buck has to tell his squad to get in their pods, twice.

This is not how I imagined troopers like that would be.

I wouldn't say they were cowards, less motivated and disrespectful yes, but not necessarily cowards. I have always thought about ODSTs as their nickname Helljumpers. Battle hardened and disciplined like you said, but they like doing their own thing, and that is killing Covies, which is what my guess would be for their lack of enthusiasm.

They were all pumped to get aboard Regret's ship and when they found out they were going on an under-the-radar ONI mission, I'm sure they were bummed, at least that's my opinion.

If not that then perhaps to reflect the feelings or humanity in general about the war, being brought to the edge of extinction over 25 and some odd years.

Just my thoughts.

Generalizations.
Helping idiots hate other idiots since people have existed.

Since when are they cowards? I don't recall them running from any fights.
I recall Buck fighting his way through a Full company of aliens JUST to reach a fellow soldier. An average marine would have left Dare for dead.

The only one who shows any disrespect is Romeo. Mickey, Dutch, and the Rookie obey his orders and show a lot of professionalism. Plus, Romeo's attitude adds a bit of humor to the story; He's like Sgt. Johnson in a way.

Less motivated? Please. These are the guys that drove down a highway full of covenant just to deliver a slimy alien to a slimy alien ship. If that's not commitment, I don't know what is.
-------------------------------------

You can't just have all of them be battle hardened badasses that don't talk. That makes for a dull storyline with little to no character interaction.
A boring storyline= awful campaign = CoD (lulz).

The ODST's acted like the way they did to show that they are NORMAL humans. Players are no longer a genetically enhanced supersoldier. Bungie wanted to make that clear in ODST, so they made the characters act less like Badasses and more like average people.

FYI, Bungie isn't here to match its storyline with the novels. They're here to make money.
To make money, you need good games. To make good games, you need good storylines. To make good storylines, you need character interaction; like Romeo running his mouth off at Buck, which I find hilarious.

United Armed Forces

There are always odd ones out. Really the only "cowardliness" and "disrespect" is Romeo. Dutch, Mickey, Rookie and Buck all show that their main goal is whatever objective they're supposed to pursue - regroup and find out what the hell is going on.

DEATH TO MASTER CHEIF

There not cowards except when there stairing at a wall making me do all the work but BUCK just wants to make sure his squad stays alive like any over seer would

You fail to recognize the brilliance of good storytelling.

You take Buck- the serious C.O. who watched Reach get glassed and seen friends die.
Bungie paired him without a complete opposite, Romeo, the smartass who runs his mouth.
This creates a lot of character interaction between the two, most of which is hilarious-

"You had to pick the tallest building? I'm really digging all these stairs."
"You ever get tired of biching, Romeo?"
"You ever get tired of busting my balls?"
"...Point taken."

Have you read "The Cole Protocol"?

The helljumpers kidnapped Keyes and subdued him - to give him a tatto.

And...read Dirt.

Animator, 3D modeller, Artist.

well i go with the guy who said they are all replacements, Excluding Buck. Buck is a vet. and he seems to act that way to. I just didn't like th light hearted feel to ODST. I guess at this point in my life id like to see a more gritty halo experience, maybe thats why i liked reach. It was moving towards that grittier more down to earth feel. ODST was a good personal story, but lacked any real sense of threat or feeling other than. "WOO. -blam!-..! what now? alright were done" sorta deal.

They mostly drop at night, mostly.

Oops. I think I just lost your mind.

Not all squads are the same. Any modern military might have a highly motivated, serious squad and a less respectful or motivated one in the same platoon. In addition to all the points made above about their mission, status as replacements, etc.

  • 09.20.2011 9:32 PM PDT

You know our motto, We deliver!

They are slightly disrespectful but I see it as not being totally professional because of their bad-ass reputation. I wouldn't say the ODSTs in ODST are cowards at all. Maybe less motivated but not cowards.

  • 09.21.2011 2:16 AM PDT

Yea true

  • 09.21.2011 2:19 AM PDT

"I may not be perfect, but always been true."

Knowing Reach has fallen probably made them less motivated....I don't blame them.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

:)
The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

There are always exceptions to the case. ODST did nothing wrong.

And where did you get cowardice from the ODST's in the game from?

  • 09.21.2011 9:10 AM PDT

Walk softly, and carry a big midget.

Not all humans are the same OP.

  • 09.21.2011 10:19 AM PDT

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

The ODSTs showed no cowardice in that game whatsoever. Romeo saying he wouldn't go into the tunnels wasn't fear, it was common sense. Granted they may not have been the best ODSTs out there (Except for Buck), but there's always an exception. Either way they still outperformed all the marines on the field.
