I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

Okay, so Bungie implements a friends list, how would it work? Would it show who is online? That would be cool for sending a PM. Example: Dude, cool thread in the Septagon titled...

Would there be a pop up? Side bar? Something that floats on top that you can move around all over the page? Just some thoughts.

@Geegs30

Couple the Friends List with a new notification system, with the highest importance being put on the ability to disable things people don't want.

Like getting a notification when someone quotes you? Leave the check box filled. Don't want that many notifs, uncheck the box and be happy too.

Something like this.

So Community what do you think?

Selfishly I wouldn't like it, for the simple fact that I have no friends.

I come here because it makes me feel as if I am part of a community. If there was a friends list, I would feel like the community was breaking off into it's own little clicks, and I was being alienated. This would cause me to not want to visit, nor participate in any discussions. Also I'm sure that there would be some visible representation of how many friends someone has, and this to would make me jealous of their popularity.

Even though my opinion has little value, I say nay on the friends list. If anything, perhaps integrate users accounts somehow with facebook and twitter. Break down the fourth wall and let people know the person behind the b.net account. Or think outside the box and create something new and greatness.

I actually like that idea. It would be nice to see, but you have to wonder if it would be really something that is "worth it". Sure, most of the regulars would use it, but most of us already have each other on MSN or Skype. Guess we will have to wait an see if the idea continues to grow.

  • 09.21.2011 9:19 PM PDT

Okay I say for this idea, I say we remove the Xbox LIVE friends list as when you think about it Bungie is not so much associated with Microsoft no more and when new games come out for the PS3 and Wii its just going to look weird.

So replace that with a special contacts pop up where you can quickly send messages to your friends, chat with them or send them links to your content on your fileshare. How about that?

What do you mean? Bungie.net is a site dedicated to being a gathering place for people who, at one time or another, are fans/players of Bungie games.

That can easily describe a "social network".

Wouldn't it be great if the default response was a discussion of how a friends list might be placed on bungie.net, how that would impact other systems, the social dynamic, groups, public forum, game interaction, etc.? But no, instead, we get "Bungie.net is not Facebook", which, if you really think about it, means absolutely nothing at all. *rolls eyes*

Loose talk is noose talk.

A friends list would be cool. One thing I do not want is bnet to link up to Facebook. Bungie should innovate, maybe with a chat feature, and maybe with other exciting features. One thing is for certain: Any friends list + chat system should be combined in some way with Bungie's future games.

(in a theoretical world where a "Friends List" is just a list of bnet profiles that you can have, with no additional functionality)

I've had a few thoughts recently in this vein:

1) Obviously it could let you know who's on so you could have a chat with them. Would go handily with a more up to date PM system (threaded, to see a conversations) but would work just as well without one.

2) Bungie.net is all about stats; an internal FL would let you compare stats with your friends (like a friends leaderboard) across PC, PS3, X360, mobile, ect, all from one place. It would also be nice to find a way to incorporate your XBL, PS3, facebook, ect lists automatically or semi-automatically, so that more mainstream people could take advantage of the system without too much effort. (Kind of like XBL linking is now, but fleshed out even more, although I'd like to see the ability to remove people who maybe you have on XBL but don't want on bungienet.)

3) We apparently have mobile messaging now. I haven't tried it but I bet a friend's list would make that easier. For our more active friends, a little envelope next to each name (or something) could let them know when they have a message from someone important.

4) Discovering groups is almost as rough as finding members for one. Why not look at the groups that someone's friends are in and suggest a few that their friends have in common? Hey speaking of which, how about suggesting users who have similar friends in common? It could help with joining groups, starting
private games, and stuff like that.

The whole facebook integration thing with Crimson screams to me for a Bungie focused solution. Why are we forced to use an external website to verify identities when we all already have them here? I don't remember exactly why you needed to use facebook, but I believe part of it was finding friends for the leaderboards.

Sending messages from bungie.net to your friends on whatever system would be awesome. Steam and XBL already allow this in some way, and it's definitely been useful for putting games together.

Just ask people here to be your X-box live friends and, if you have a linked gamertag, they will appear when you click next to that green triangle with a circle on top (when they are online). That is as good a friend list as any.
Underlined is where it's a problem. Plus, that list is for Xbox LIVE, not Bungie.net - different circles of people, and less site integration between the two.

If there's going to be a friends list, it has to be one that's directly centred around you (attached to your bungie.net account).

But don't the majority of Bungie.net users have a linked gamertag? If so, then what would be the difference between the two if you add someone on X-box live, who is also a user on Bungie.net?

Dead Mans Hand-Always Loaded.

I WAS SOCK

The only real downside I can see out of a friends list/chat system would be if you were looking at the main forums as if they were a private group.

In that aspect, you could argue that chat could take away from the activity of the actual forums.

That being said, we're talking about the mains, and I don't think that really applies, but some may.

On that topic though, a friends list/chat might actually kill off activity in private groups. Smaller ones anyways. Just a thought.

You're making up a statistic of which you have no way to measure. Not totally disagreeing with you, just sayin'.

What would be a good feature, however, is if you could directly send messages to people on your x-box live friend list from Bungie.net.

I foresee no problem with implementing the OP's idea, and socialising is a good thing- but I think we should modify the x-box live friend list first, and see how that goes.

i would be down for the friends list feature just to see who's online and maybe what forum they are in so i could discuss stuff with them or what not. a chat feature would be nice but i honestly would not use it and i don't think it's completely necessary..

Possibly, but again, there are limitations with that since it's all managed by Xbox LIVE. The best you could probably get out of it is a list of gamertags, not bungie.net accounts (again, that's another problem).

Also, looking toward the future, as Bungie moves away from only supporting LIVE services, what happens (hypothetically) if a PSN user joins (ie. someone without LIVE)? It's going to be a hassle for them to have to sign up for a gamertag just for a feature that you would expect to be integrated into this site.
