But don't the majority of Bungie.net users have a linked gamertag? If so, then what would be the difference between the two if you add someone on X-box live, who is also a user on Bungie.net?
Possibly, but again, there are limitations with that since it's all managed by Xbox LIVE. The best you could probably get out of it is a list of gamertags, not bungie.net accounts (again, that's another problem).

Also, looking toward the future, as Bungie moves away from only supporting LIVE services, what happens (hypothetically) if a PSN user joins (ie. someone without LIVE)? It's going to be a hassle for them to have to sign up for a gamertag just for a feature that you would expect to be integrated into this site.

I guess a friend list is determinant on how a person would use it (for on-line gaming, instant private messaging, group chat... ect). If someone would just use one for getting together for online play, the current x-box live friend list works well. If one wants to use another type of social function, then I guess a new system should be added- the big question is how.

That's where I think a dedicated Bungie.net friend system would be perfect.

Imagine having a kind of integration in Bungie's next game where you could also manage your Bungie.net identity, allowing you to do things like adding friends, sending messages, creating groups, etc... which is independent of the platform you're using. For example, let's say I've got my Xbox LIVE profile connected to my Bungie.net profile, and my friend has his PSN account connected to his Bungie.net profile. I could send a message* to him from my Xbox via my Bungie.net account to his Bungie.net account which he would receive on his PS3**.

That is something I'm waiting to see from a company one day, and I think Bungie can do it.

* Substitute this with anything you can imagine. User generated content, Private Messages, etc...
** Substitute this with anything you can image as well. Like an iPhone!

I have always, deeply wanted to see a feature where I can message users from Bungie.net directly to an X-box live user on my friend list and vice versa. Saves time, and is extremely convenient and useful. Cross platform messaging would be awesome, especially via Bungie.net.

What do you mean? Bungie.net is a site dedicated to being a gathering place for people who, at one time or another, are fans/players of Bungie games.

That can easily describe a "social network".

Wouldn't it be great if the default response was a discussion of how a friends list might be placed on bungie.net, how that would impact other systems, the social dynamic, groups, public forum, game interaction, etc.? But no, instead, we get "Bungie.net is not Facebook", which, if you really think about it, means absolutely nothing at all. *rolls eyes*

Posted by: Xplode441
this community wasn't made to be a social network site

It feels pointless to quote this because the likelihood of getting any sort of response is somewhat close to 0, but if we started making suggestions based around what is successful in social networking sites would they actually be taken seriously should they gather momentum?

Over the years, it feels more like bungie.net has become more of a social site anyways. Sure it is a forum, but all the forum really is is just public discussion centers, similar to the "Home page" feature of Facebook. The main difference between the two being that you can't make a thread saying "goodnight everyone I'm going to bed after feeding my kid twelve tacos".

But anyways, there are private groups here and people make friends on here. A chat feature, or a sort of friends lists, could easily be beneficial on the social aspect of things. It'd be easier to send quick messages to friends, or even to talk to specific people more easily. Just because a feature resembles that of Facebook doesn't automatically make it bad. Bungie will never truly become a social networking site in it's fullest anyways, because in it's roots it is a video game forum. What people should be worrying about instead is how we could implement such a feature and what kinds of things would make it successful.

Or you could just adapt. Lol.

I lol'd at the absurd miscommunication that occurs whenever dibbs post something. Perhaps his brain is so highly evolved that he can no longer clearly communicate with lesser life forms, even among his own species.

Perhaps I just don't understand this situation but I feel there are legitimate concerns to air out.

Why would I have any desire to interact with the community at large if I could just tailor a conversation to suit my needs (the biggest one being who to include in it)? Groups have long been used as places of retreat for members who have established enough relationships and decided that they would rather just talk to those within their circle of friends as opposed to the community as a whole. It seems these additional features would allow users to ignore the community to an even greater extent.

Now I realize that this isn't exactly a bad thing. After all, shouldn't users have the ability to tailor conversations to suit their needs? Isn't progress defined by the amount choices and realities made available to you? On the basis of an individual user yes, these proposed additions would seem to make their overall experience of the website better. But how would this impact the community as a whole? If this website is tailored to promote the individual experience, wouldn't the standard practice of users be to participate in the community only long enough to establish relationships and then cease interactions with the mains?

I guess the question(s) I'm asking are are these concerns valid (and if not why not) and how do you promote a user-centric experience while still promoting community involvement?

you guys have no information on what our limitations might be when making new stuff
Bungie's knows NO BOUNDS!

I like how people itt are trying to vouch for the web team.
If you don't want a friends list, then don't use it.
If you want it, then great.

I think a friend's list that showed when people are online, last log-in and an implemented chat would be awesome!

Instead of arguing over a friends list should or shouldn't be done, the question should be "if a friends list existed, how would you want bungie to make it work, and how would you want existing systems to change to accomodate it". That's an interesting conversation, where this one is bordering on the dumb side.

Guys, it looks like we're going to have a friends list, maybe we should do what our omniscient leader says and get better results than just not saying what we want in a friend's list. --->Sarcasm Or maybe Achronos posted that for no apparant reason.<---Sarcasm

I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

I actually like that idea, but I'd like to expand it to full site integration. Including specialized forums for the game which could be read in or out of game which would be for any number of applications depending on what the genre of game.

Just using a persistent world MMO as an example boards could be used to conduct trades, find "guilds", find parties/groups, announce sitings for certain rare mobs. Everything done in real time. Maybe custom alerts could be set up to let them know when something specific was posted. This way such things wouldn't be limited to end game chat, allowing people who are offline to be notified. I'd really like to see a game link the online and offline world seamlessly.

I think your idea to merge players Bungie.net identity and and in-game identity would be a good start and give and give an added bonus for keeping a friends list on the site.
