Even though it's obvious that it won't happen in this computer generation or even the next, I think the ultimate aim of Bungie should be to make a full Halo universe. A 24/7 online, worldwide server with Earth, the covenant worlds, the colonised worlds and Halo itself. People could choose between the Earth forces, not just Spartans, or become an alien invader. People could be transported straight to the front line, where entire worlds could be won or lost, new technology gets developed and the nature of the war changes constantly. Promotions could be used as a reward system, and players could control the battle on many levels, leading from a small group of men to armardas of battleships. Is it just me, or am I right in thinking that this could be the future?

My friends and I have wanted to make that same game for the last year and a half :) Nice idea. It would be cool if the armies you would lead were not just AI, but real players too. The only problem this presents is if your people are offline. If you had a small squad you'd have to prearrange times to meet, fight, etc.

I actually thought of something like this a few months ago (for real). I think it would be cool, if not somewhat impractical, if it took place on an infinite scale in real time. I think it would be cool if it combined RTS, RTT, space combat (you could command a cruiser, man a fighter, or something like that. Or you could be a cook!), and FPS elements. As a ground commander, you could call an orbiting ship to deploy its ODSTs to your position. Some people would be computer controlled, but others would be human(FPS), and you could only advise them in what to do. If I think of more I'll edit this post.

I'll admit this is just a test, being a forum noob and everything. But it worked! 3 replies! Anyway, you are right in saying that there are a lot of details to sort out before it became practical and useable. Plus, such a big playing area is going to take a loooooong time to make. And games don't normally take too kindly to being turned into different methods of playing. But this will all be in the future, when we will be wearing silver jumpsuits and having holidays on pluto. Or something. :/

Back in the day (late 1999) when Bungie was it’s own company and Halo was being developed for the Mac, Halo was a MMOG (or at least something similar). I guess you could kind of compare it to Tribes, except in third person, and a bijillion times cooler.

You should check out this PCGamer scan if you want to see what Halo was going to be like before the xbox came along and ruined things.

Also, this place has a lot of pre-microsoft halo stuff in it. Dig around; you’ll know it when you see it. Also be sure to check out HBO’s screenshot database for some oldschool halo goodness.

*Edit* added other links.

that would be amazing but to solve the problem of not enough people being online at 5 am to do much it could be a constant battle and if you left an AI or another gamer took your place so its a constant battle no matter what time of day or night, also it would be cool if people could play on their XBox with people on computer

I keep being reminded of that game Freedom Fighters. Even though it is 3rd person, it still has just the kind of team play that Halo needs. Each person has loyal soldiers that can advance, defend and protect. This is with the same kind of intelligence as the marines have in Halo. Add to that Halo's amazing vehicles, weapons and uniqueness, and "Halo 5" will be unbeatable. If it's still going by then. Which it should be.

Damn, that would be unbelievable! I don't know if it's possible, though. Maybe for Xenon.?.
Also, if you're into the whole "persistent universe" thing, be sure to check out the upcoming MechAssault 2. It'll feature a fully conquerable universe.
