Personally, while I think the feedback from the gaming community can be crucial, there should be a definite line between the forces. Developers face so many levels of complexity in the challenge of crafting a good game... and to a certain extent, there's a lot to be said for open source projects.
However, there's a huge difference between creating a game, and creating say, a more secure web browser. As many people have already mentioned, there's the disparate notions of what makes a game great for one thing, and for another, defining too much too early can make for a stagnant situation that doesn't allow true creative force. That whole "too many cooks in the kitchen" thing comes to mind here. Besides, isn't Aerospace Bungie's answer to inviting community involvement in game development?
