Sony didn't intend for the PS2's shelf-life to be as long as it was after the launch of the PS3, that was more of a failure on the new console's ability to draw consumers while the PS2's low price and already established game library garnered attention from people looking for a cheaper, but still Sony, alternative.
No, it seems now that Microsoft and Sony are both set on giving their consoles both a very long life, allowing them to keep their profits up while giving them time to work on new consoles. 2015 is likely the best bet as to when we should be looking for the new consoles to surface.

Unlikely. Microsoft and Sony have said that their new motion sensing devices are to extend the life of both systems until 2015. That is more than enough proof, imo.
You can extend a console life while you're launching it's successor, remember about PS2-PS3, it's not a problem. The old gen was still living when next gen came, there was even games on these system (360-PS2-PS3)...
